Margaret Atwood (1939- ) is one of the most distinguished female writers in contemporary Canada. Surfacing is her second novel, published in 1972. Through the novel, Atwood expresses her deep concern about the women. Literally, it is about a journey back to hometown and nature; but at the same time it also symbolizes a psychological journey for the heroine to find her true self. By analyzing the protagonist's personal experience with camera, language and abortion which serve as symbols of masculine power, this paper reveals women's dominated and victimized position in a male-oriented society, the gradual formation of the protagonist's feminist awareness and the process of her self-rediscovery.  相似文献

A Streetcar Named Desire is a tragedy.Blanche,a beautiful woman, finally goes insane. She has an indecent past. She tells lies and is indulgent in her behavior toward men.All these seem to suggest that she deserves such a consequence. However, the fact is that Blanche once was a pure girl who dreamed of true love and happy family. It is the cruel reality that results in her tragedy.Compared with her,Stella's tragedy is a tragedy of toleration.Unlike Blanche,Stella prefers to tolerate when confronting with the reality. The tragedy of Blanche and Stella is typical of the time in which women cannot enjoy the same rights as men.  相似文献

Sex differences are a fundamental fact of human life and it is not surprising to find them reflected in language. It's said that women tend to use more standard forms of English, while men tend to use less standard forms of English.Over the past thirty years, and as a result of the women's movement, gender issues have become entangled with issues of language.Recent research indicates that sex may be more fundamental as an influence on sociolinguistic variation than has been recognized so far. This article will try to discuss the different language use between men and women.  相似文献

Owing to the influences of Greek's view of fate, Dorset peasant's fatalism and Schopenhauer' s pessimistic philosophy, Hardy showed more or less a pessimistic tendency in his early writings and this tendency illustrated itself in his writing of Eustacia, heroine of The Return of the Native. He believed that Eustacia' s tragedy resulted from the disagreement between her aspiration for a brilliant life outside Egdon Heath and the fate imposed on her by some mysterious force working at odds with her. This is what the paper attempts to prove.  相似文献

Sons and Lovers, written by one of the most uncompromising and volcanic authors of the 20th century, was the first modern portrayal of a phenomenon that later, thanks to Freud, became easily recognizable as the Oedipus complex. The cycles of Paul's relationship with these three women are terrifying at times. In an Oedipus like relationship Paul is unable to discover a love that equals his mother and even after her death "his soul could not leave her…he was with her still" this relationship is the main them present throughout the book and it produces a highly emotional and powerful conflict. Here, frank sexuality became a creative symbol for the life force and was frequently pitted against industrialism, which Lawrence considered dehumanizing.  相似文献

Theodore Dreiser relates a story of Carrie's rise from a poor country girl to a Broadway star in Sister Came. An attempt is made in this paper to analyze the cold society. By way of analyzing this unequal and cruel reality to prove: in the world only the fittest can survive, the standards and requirements of morality are challenged and the traditional value is suspected. In the cold reality, any way that can protect oneself or survive in. the world is sensible, morality and traditional value are weak and meaningless.  相似文献

People in our country know Eileen Chang mainly as an outstanding writer and literator. In fact she is appreciated more than being a writer internationally.Yet Chang’s outstanding talent as a trans1ator is known very 1ittle in mainland China. This thesis selects Eileen Chang’s translation phenomenon as the object of study. Mainly because at first, the translator is of course the decisive factor that makes the target text equivalent to the source text, and case study of outstanding translators obviously is a very important part of both translation theories and practice. Among the factors influencing translation, the subjectivity of the translator is the key one. For a translator who is also a writer,his/ her writing view influences his/ her translating ractice. Eileen Chang’s writing view is inflected in her translation of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. In my thesis, I would analysis her skill when translating the Old Man and the Sea. I found that she reflected her own attitude to the life when translating the novel.  相似文献

Based on the existing data concerning the evolution of the sexual reproduction, it is argued that the processes of sex differentiation and interactions play a key role in evolution. From the beginning environment and organism are unified. In a changing dynamic environment life originates and the interaction between life and environment develops from simple to more complex organisms. Sexual reproduction is introduced after the origin of meiosis and is a key process in evolution. The asexual reproduction process prepares to dispersal. Sexual reproduction process adds the genome renewal and the gamete-gamete interaction. Reproduction and dispersal are connected and the process of reproduction has similarities between asexual and sexual reproduction. Unicellular algae develop the physiological and morphological sex differentiation. Sex differentiation is connected with the way of dispersal. The step to multicellular plants introduces cell isolation after meiosis and by the stay on the mother plant within a cell or organ, plant-cell apoplastic interaction originates and by prolonged stay the plant-plant interaction. This stay influences the type of dispersal. A life cycle with alternation of generations and two moments of dispersal permits plants to go on land. In ferns a shift in the moment of sex differentiation to meiospore happens and the stay of the macrospore leads to the seed plants. In water all types of sexual reproduction, interactions and the alternation of generations are prepared and these are used to conquest land. On land the biotic dispersal is realized. The phylogeny of sexual reproduction reveals that the sex differentiation and interaction are the main causes in the evolution of sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction shows interactions during gamete fusion, between organism and environment and in multicellular plants between organisms. With respect to other types of interaction as in symbiosis or the nutrient chain, interaction is considered as an important action which is based on a persisting cooperation and points to a push during evolution. The push is expressed as communication: the driving force in the evolution. Based on the interactions between organisms and interactions between organisms and the dynamic environment, communication is considered as a driving force leading to the evolution as explained in the development of plant reproduction. Consequences for reproduction, its regulation and the process of evolution are discussed.  相似文献

Emest Hermngway is famous for his "masculinity" style in his writing. Meanwhile, he also describes female characters and their strengths and reveals his own sensitivity to gender issues. His early exposure to women is from his upbringing dominatrix. His failure on marriage plays an important role on his works. In his mind, women are the combination of angel and evil. They act elegantly and attract men's heart, but sometimes they are changeable. Catherine Barkley is a typical angel except her suspect. Catherine Bourne is an evil though she is charming. Brett Ashley is attractive, but she can't love whom she loves. That is a society without choice. Women's feelings attach to men. They show their right to love, to change. Even to escape the cruel reality. At the same time they know they can' t cast the society. Hemingway pays more attention on women's feelings in his writing. On the one hand, he respects women's elegance, beauty and view on love. He wants to get love and care from them. On the other hand, he holds in awe on women. He assumes women are changeable, and is afraid of being hurt. Hemingway' s mind is full of conflicts, and his love, hatred, sympathy belong to not merely male, but also female. No matter she is angel or evil, he can't help himself and his readers falling in love with these women of extraordinary beauty.  相似文献

The selection of titanium alloys has become a complex decision-making task due to the growing number of creation and utilization for titanium alloys, with each having its own characteristics, advantages, and limitations. In choosing the most appropriate titanium alloys, it is very essential to offer a reasonable and intelligent service for technical engineers. One possible solution of this problem is to develop a database system (DS) to help retrieve rational proposals from different databases and information sources and analyze them to provide useful and explicit information. For this purpose, a design strategy of the fuzzy set theory is proposed, and a distributed database system is developed. Through ranking of the candidate titanium alloys, the most suitable material is determined. It is found that the selection results are in good agreement with the practical situation.  相似文献

This paper is to explore and analyze the representations of women in Hollywood action films-Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels. In the former Hollywood action films such as 007,women are often depicted as a foil or assistant to the leading actors. What have been emphasized is their appearance and body;they depend on men and they need to be protected by men. However,in Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels, women appear to be the leading roles. They become physically strong and they are able to defeat men. However, the women images in these films are still designed to meet the men’s standard,to satisfy their sexual desire towards women, and to reflect their male domination.Part I is a brief introduction of the women images in former action films and offers the thesis statement.Part II concentrates on the marginalized and specialized women images, which provide pleasant sensation to male audiences.Part III is about the male domination reflected in these mentioned films.Part IV focuses on the cinematic ways of shooting used in these films and how the women bodies are exposed in front of the audiences by using these means of shooting.Part V is the conclusion of this paper.  相似文献

This paper discloses the marginalized position of the low-class women in the man-dominated, money-orientated society. Emerging as an orphan from the lowest social class, Moll courageously defies her birth and manages to achieve the self-designated identity of a gentlewoman. Centering on Moll's search for personal identity, this paper discusses the various roles she has assumed to obtain gentlewom- an-ship, a maid, mistress, wife, thief, prisoner, penitent and finally a prosperous gentlewoman, with a view of unmasking the real Moll underneath the multi-layered disguises. In fact Moll is nobody but an outsider being marginalized in the patriarchal society.  相似文献
