A Feminist Reading of Margaret Atwood's Surfacing

Margaret Atwood (1939- ) is one of the most distinguished female writers in contemporary Canada. Surfacing is her second novel, published in 1972. Through the novel, Atwood expresses her deep concern about the women. Literally, it is about a journey back to hometown and nature; but at the same time it also symbolizes a psychological journey for the heroine to find her true self. By analyzing the protagonist's personal experience with camera, language and abortion which serve as symbols of masculine power, this paper reveals women's dominated and victimized position in a male-oriented society, the gradual formation of the protagonist's feminist awareness and the process of her self-rediscovery.

Implications of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis on Second Language Teaching

1 IntroductionForeign language teaching generally refers to the theory and practice of teaching a foreign language.It has close connection with linguistics,psychology,education,philosophy,sociology and other disciplines.Since linguistics and foreign language teaching both study language phenomena on the aspects of theory and practice,the two are much closely related to each other.Linguistics is beneficial to language teaching in two aspects: Firstly,applied linguistics extends theoretical linguistics in the direction of language learning and teaching,so that the teacher is enabled to make better decisions on the goal and content of the teaching.Secondly,applied linguistics states the insights and implications that linguistic theories have on the language teaching methodology.Once the goal and content of the teaching are settled,the teacher has to consider questions of how to teach.As an English teacher it really enriches my mind on what to teach and how to teach more effectively.This paper will focus on Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis and its implications on second language teaching.     

Narrator and Narrative Voice in “Soldier＇s Home”

＂Soldier＇s Home,＂ Hemingway employs a third person narrator which narrates the short story in a seemingly detached and indifferent narrative voice. However,further exploration of the narrator and narrative voice in the story demonstrates that,instead of being thoroughly detached,the narrator constantly penetrates into the protagonist＇s consciousness,merges with character＇s voice,and even betrays Hemingway＇s sympathies with his protagonist. This paper attempts to explore narrator and narrative voice used in this story which contribute a lot to the alienation theme of the story as well as the successful depiction and characterization of a young soldier who finds himself desperate,disillusioned and alienated after returning home from the First World.War.

Application of Mind Map in College English Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary is one of the three important parts of any language and it is also the cornerstone of any language.So the vocabulary teaching is very important in language teaching.Because vocabulary is stored in our mind in a semantic network,applying mind map to vocabulary teaching and learning can facilitate the activation of various semantic relations among words in the mind,which greatly promotes the learners’deep processing of vocabulary.Second,words are usually related to one another in the form of cohesions in the context.Constructing mind map of vocabulary in the text can make more noticeable the interrelations among words in the text,which will enhance the participants’language proficiency.The author of the present thesis attempts to prove that mind mapaided vocabulary teaching has a more positiveeffect on enlarging participants’vocabulary,though both approaches to vocabulary teaching have positive influence on participants’vocabu-lary growth.This study reveals that it is rational and feasible to apply mind map and Visual Thesaurus to college English vocabulary teaching and learning.
