Summary At an ambient temperature (Ta) of 8°C, intraventricular administration of isoproterenol inhibited metabolic heat production and led to hypothermia in rats. In contrast, at a Ta of 22°C and of 30°C, isoproterenol decreased cutaneous circulation and led to hyperthermia. The data indicate that isoproterenol inhibits both heat production and heat loss mechanisms in rats.This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Council of the Republic of China. Summary At ambient temperatures (Ta) of both 8 and 22°C, intraventricular administration of TRH (10–80 g) produced a dose-dependent hypothermia in rats. The hypothermia was due to both decreased metabolic heat production and cutaneous vasodilatation. Summary The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T3 level was affected by temperature (25°C<7°C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T4 level was affected by photoperiod (short day < long day) at 25°C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T4 level under short photoperiod at 25°C. Thus, higher plasma T4 level under long photoperiod at 25°C might be induced by testosterone.  相似文献

During the onset of heat stroke, rabbits displayed hyperthermia (42.8°C), and decreased cerebral perfusion pressure and decreased cerebral blood flow (as reflected by a prolonged cerebral circulation time) compared to those of normothermic rabbits. On the other hand febrile rabbits, during the fever plateau did not show the above responses, although they had a similar level of hyperthermia (42.4°C). The data support the concept that cerebral ischemia is the main cause for the onset of the heat stroke syndrome.The work reported here was supported by grants from the National Science Council (Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China).  相似文献

Summary ATPase activity and force generation have been measured simultaneously in isolated, demembranated muscle fibers of the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) between 0 and 30°C. Tension generation is relatively independent of temperature above 15°C and falls with a Q10 of <1.5 on decreasing the temperature to 0°C. In contrast, the Q10 for ATPase activity is 2.2 over the range 0–30°C. The results are interpreted in terms of the cross bridge theory of contraction.  相似文献

Summary Administration of glucagon to rats at 25°C had no effect upon their VO2 while administration of noradrenaline or noradrenaline plus glucagon raised the VO2-At 5°C, noradrenaline had no effect upon the cold-enhanced VO2, while glucagon caused a rise of 13.7% implying increased glucagon sensitivity at 5°C. The glucagon-induced enhancement of VO2 was abolished by concurrent administration of noradrenaline.  相似文献

Summary The prostaglandin E1-induced fever was neither potentiated nor attenuated at all levels of the ambient temperatures (2, 22 and 32°C) studied after pretreatment of the conscious rabbits with p-chlorophenylalanine, when compared to the untreated control.This work was supported by grants from National Science Council of Republic of China and John B. Summary Laboratory tests have been performed, on the behavior of the jellyfishPelagia noctiluca as a function of the water temperature. It has been found that the usual contractions of the umbrella are almost completely missing at 6°C; they begin to appear at about 7–8°C and they reach frequencies of about 10 and 40 per min at 11 and 15°C respectively. An ambient temperature of about 11°C appears to be a threshold value below which this kind of medusa ceases to move actively and sinks, while at higher temperatures it gradually begins to shift, showing a positive thermotropism in the presence of temperature gradients greater than about 0.01 °C/cm.This work was supported by grant No. 80.00748.88 from the National Research Coucil of Italy (CNR).  相似文献

Summary The eggs and larvae are affected by the changes in the humidity level around them. The eggs do not develop below 87% relative humidity at 30 °C and 25 °C. At sub-developmental rel. hum. they remain viable for 30 h at 81%, but at 73% rel. hum. level they do not survive beyond 18 h. Survival of larvae in 100% rel. hum. is longer at 30 °C than at 25 °C and 35 °C, and also they exhibit a poor resistance to desiccation.Acknowledgment. Summary (1) Tissue slices of the liver and pieces of the skin of summer-frogs were incubated at 47.5°C for 30–150 min. Their respiration was measured during this incubation period and thereafter at a temperature of 37.5°C.(2) As a sign of an irreversible inactivation of the enzymes, the average respiration was inhibited. However, after certain periods of incubation at 47.5°C, over-shoot phenomena in the O2-uptake at the temperature of 37.5°C were seen.  相似文献

Summary Ventilatory responses to CO2 were examined at different temperatures in the snake,Coluber constrictor. CO2 sensitivity increased between 15 and 25°C but not between 25 and 35°C. All mammalian cells maintain a resting potential generated by ions moving down concentration gradients. In excitable cells, the inside potential is negative relative to outside. In order to maintain this electrochemical gradient, the sodium potassium (Na/K) pump actively transports out three sodium ions for every two potassium ions it brings in. This process generates a net outward current and thus hyperpolaizes the resting potential. I employed dihydroouabain (DHO) to inhibit the Na/K pump and thus measure its contribution to the resting potential. It contributed 9.0 mV at 34°C and 3.8 mV at 25°C. The PK/PNa ratios were calculated at both temperatures before and after subtracting the Na/K pump contribution. These ratios also suggested a decreased contribution of the Na/K pump under hypothermia. Taken together, these results suggest that the pump contribution to the resting potential is more significant at physiologic temperatures (34°C) than at room temperature (25°C), and that estimates of selective permeability can only be accurately obtained after assessing and eliminating the Na/K pump contribution to the resting potential.  相似文献

Summary Intraperitoneal administration of either haloperidol or chlorpromazine produced hypothermia both in the cold (8° C) and at room temperature (22°C). The hypothermia was brought about both by a decrease in metabolic heat production and an increase in the cutaneous temperature of tail and foot skin. Summary The viscosity, apparent molar volume and conductivity of NaCl, KCl, NaBr, KBr, NaNO3 and KNO3 solutions at mass fraction of dioxane (10, 20 and 30%)-water mixtures at 30–45°C±0.01°C have been measured. Summary The effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of two Nigerian foods-raw cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour and palm oil, have been investigated. Increased retention of both thiamine and riboflavin as a result of increased water activity (Aw) were recorded for cowpea flour stored for 6 months. A storage temperature of 5°C led to minimal losses of both vitamins in the stored flour. Differences in physico-chemical characteristics were observed between palm oil produced by the traditional method and that produced by a modern commercial method. Increasing Aw led to decreasing loss of unsaturation in the traditionally-produced palm oil during 4-week storage at ambient temperature (25°C).  相似文献
