Heterocyclic steroids. Steroidal pyrimidines

Inhibitory action of bradykinin on release of the adrenergic transmitter in the isolated lapine kidney

Summary In the isolated lapine kidney perfused with tyrode solution and prelabeled with [³H] norepinephrine, bradykinin (10 ng/ml) decreased the overflow of tritium elicited by sympathetic nerve stimulation both in the presence and absence of indomethacin. These observations indicate that bradykinin acts at presynaptic sites reducing release of the adrenergic transmitter in the isolated lapine kidney.This study was supported by American Heart Association Grant 77-803, and U.S. Public Health Service Grant HL-16134 from the National Heart and Lung Institute.     

Effect of aldosterone and methylprednisolone on cardiac NaK-ATPase

Summary Aldosterone (15 g BID) and methylprednisolone (8 mg QD) administration to female guinea-pigs augmented both the total and the specific activity of NaK-ATPase but not the activity of adenylate cyclase in the cardiac sarcolemma. The rise in NaK-ATPase was due to increase in the number of enzyme molecules; catalytic activity and ouabain-sensitivity of individual molecules did not change.Acknowledgments. Enhanced depressor reflex by stimulation of superior cervical ganglion and by propranolol

Summary The systemic depressor reflex in cats evoked by inflation of an intrasinusal balloon is enhanced by stimulation of the superior cervical ganglion and by close infusion of 20g/ml/min of (d, 1) propranolol.This work was supported by grant No. 22600-1 NIH, Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Bethesda, MD.     

Morphological characteristics of the secretory granules in pancreaticβ cells from species with identical primary structures of insulin

Zusammenfassung Die Primärstruktur des Insulins ist bei Hund und Schweinidentisch. Elektronenmikroskopisch wurde festgestellt, dass die sekretorischen Granulae der pankreatischen-Zellen bei beiden Arten eine unregelmässige Form haben. Eine quantitative Analyse ergab jedoch, dass die-Granulae des Hundes länger sind als die des Schweines.

The effect ofβ-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) on bacteria

Zusammenfassung Alle untersuchten Bakterien waren gegenüber BAPN entweder ganz unempfindlich oder zeigten nur eine unspezifische Wachstumsverminderung. Diese Bakterien scheinen zum Studium lathyrogenischer Substanzen ungeeignet. Die Annahme, dass BAPN auf Mucopolysacchariden wirkt, konnte durch diese Untersuchung nicht gestützt werden.

Preparation of isolated single cardiac cells from adult frog atrial tissue

Summary Isolated cardiac cells from bullforg atrial tissue can be readily prepared by digestion of intact fragments of atrial tissue with trypsin and collagenase. These isolated cells have dimensions of about 5 m in width and range in length from 300 m to over 500 m. Such isolated cells may prove useful for the investigation of contractile activity of cardiac muscle at the single cell level and at the sarcomere level within the single cell.This investigation was supported by U.S. Public Health Service, National Institutes of Health Grant No. HL 12426 and a Kansas Heart Association Grant-in-Aid.We wish to thank Dr.J. Sommers of Duke University Medical Center for doing electron microscopy of the isolated cells to confirm the single cell nature of the preparations.     

Effect of hypothalamic lesions on erythropoietin production in weanling and adult rats

Evidence that two species of aphid ingest food through an open stylet sheath

Zusammenfassung Myzus persicae undAcyrthosiphon pisum nehmen beim Saugen an Saccharoselösungen Kohlenstoffteilchen bis zu einem Durchmesser von 0,5–1 auf (ungefähre Weite des Nahrungskanals der Stechborsten). Demnach muss die um die Stechborsten ausgebildete Speichelscheide am Ende offen sein. BeiA. pisum konnte beobachtet werden, dass grössere Kohlenstoffteilchen an der Stechborstenspitze das Saugen deutlich behindern, was durch Bewegungen der Stechborsten und erneute Speichelabgabe behoben werden konnte.

Phenol-mineral interactions: The oxidation of pyrogallol and othero-diphenols on silica gel

Zusammenfassung Die Oxydation von Pyrogallol, Brenzkatechin, Gallussäure und Dopa wird von Silikagel, nicht jedoch von-Quarz, katalysiert. Diese Katalyse erfolgt nicht nur in Wasser, sondern auch in wässerigem Alkohol und Chloroform. Dabei scheinen die elektronegativen Oberflächen des Silikagels von Bedeutung zu sein. Mg², Ca²⁺ und Al³⁺ sowie verschiedene Phenole, die keineo-Dihydroxygruppierung besitzen, hemmen die katalytische Oxydation.Von den geprüften Phenolen sind nur beio-Diphenolen Komplexbildung mit Si⁴⁺ und katalytische Oxydation durch Silikagel festzustellen.Die Bedeutung von Phenol-Mineral-Komplexen bei der Bildung von Humusstoffen wird durch die vorliegenden Untersuchungen gestützt.

Different effects of syntheticΔ 9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabis extract on steroid metabolism in male rats

Summary Repeated oral administration of cannabis extract as well as synthetic ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol to male rats produced significant changes in excretion of androgenic steroids and their metabolites as detectable in blood and urine. Cannabis extracts were found to be significantly more active than the mixtures containing same amounts of synthetic cannabinoids.Acknowledgment. Determinant of efficiency of a monomeric enzyme: Acceleration by site-specific molecules for trypsin

Summary The interaction of a specific ligand at substrate binding site was shown to be responsible for the catalytic efficiency of trypsin. Compound 48/80 decreases adenosine 3′5′-monophosphate formation in rat peritoneal mast cells
