Summary A large number of sulphur-containing compounds bearing the thiourea group -NH-CS-NH-, including substituted thiocarbanilides, 1-acyl-4-arylthiosemicar-bazides, 1-(arylaminothioformyl)-thiosemicarbazides, 4-aryl-1-(arylaminothioformyl)- thiosemicarbazides, and other related substances have been tested for potential antiviral activity. Several of these compounds have been found chemotherapeutically active against influenza virus.

Avantages et inconvénients de la fixation par perfusion du tissu nerveux à la lumière d'une donnée de cytochimie

Summary It has been extensively demonstrated that perfusion is the best fixation procedure for providing good morphological evidence ofstructures, especially in the case of nervous tissue. But it might be questioned if it should also be preferred whencytochemical data have to be obtained or compared.As a preliminary attempt to answer this question, lipoproteic inclusions in nerve cells of vegetative ganglia of adult cat have been considered. These occur in about 25% of cells after immersion in fixative, whereas if perfusion is used, a relation appears between the amount of saline perfused before the fixative fluid and the percentage of cells containing inclusions: this falls to 10% after 300 ml saline, to 1% after 800 ml. In conclusion, though structural artefacts have been avoided and fixation appears excellent, perfusion is significantly responsible for a definite cytochemical alteration.     

Influence de laβ-mercaptoéthylamine sur la réponse de l'intestin grêle du rat à une irradiation rœntgénienne localisée

Summary Intra-peritoneal injections of 15 mg of B-mercaptoethylamine in rats, with an average weight of 200 g, protect the small intestine against a local irradiation of 500 r on the antero-upper portion of the abdomen.This protection is proved mainly, as compared with the control, by a smaller decrease of cells still in mitosis after 12 and 24 hours and of the migrant cells in resting stage, by a greater precocity and higher quantitative value of the post-radiation normal and subnormal mitotic processes, and by variations in the mitotic formula (namely, in protected animals, a relatively high increase in the amount of metaphases).These experiments seem to prove a certain local and immediate action of the radio-protector, whose effects are not solely limited to the preparation of the generating system of the intestine for the later complete repair of the digestive epithelium.

Essais d'inhibition de l'action inflammatoire cutanée du chloroforme chez le rat

Summary (1)—In the rat, total extracts of cortex, cortisone and A.C.T.H. do not retard the fixation of a vital colorant at the level of a cutaneous zone irritated by chloroform.(2)—Phenergan prolongs the delay in the appearance of the blue.(3)—Sodium salicylate selectively inhibits the inflammatory cutaneous action of chloroform, even after adrenalectomy.     

Etude de la consommation d'oxygène et de la teneur en acide désoxyribonucléique du foie à divers âges chez le rat

Summary The quantitative study of whole liver DNA and liver nuclei DNA at various ages, and the simultaneous study of oxygen uptake shows the following facts:(1) The rate of oxygen consumption to the fresh weight or to the DNA or to diploid chromosomes group is the same for the adult or the young aged 8 days. The values of oxygen consumption calculated for one cell or for one nucleus (taking notice of the fact that the mean level of liver nuclei DNA varies with the age) at 8 days is only the half of the adult value. Even at two months the value is 20% lower than in the adult.(2) In older animals there is a decrease of oxygen uptake which is more noticeable on a cellular scale than with the classical rate to fresh or dry weight. We affirm the fact that the diminution of the oxygen uptake of each cell is compensated by the increase of the number of cells.     

Recherches sur le mécanisme de la rétraction du caillot et de la métamorphose visqueuse des plaquettes

Summary The concept, that viscous metamorphosis of platelets and clot retraction is initiated by thrombin and a dialyzable factor was confirmed. Under certain circumstances glucose acts as dialyzable factor. Clot retraction seems to depend upon the catabolism of glucose.     

Actions de la néostigmine,du D.F.P. et du 3318 CT sur la sensibilité du rectus de grenouille aux esters acétique,propionique et butyrique de la choline

Summary The potentiating effects of Neostigmine, D.F.P. and 3318 CT (a selective true cholinesterase inhibitor) on acetylcholine (ACh), propionylcholine (PrCh), butyrylcholine (BuCh) and amyltrimethylammonium (AmT), have been studied using the frog's rectus abdominis. Neostigmine increases the actions of the three esters much more than that of AmT. Low concentrations of D.F.P. potentiate maximally BuCh but have practically no effect on ACh, PrCh, and AmT. 3318 CT potentiates AcCh and PrCh but inhibits BuCh and AmT.These results indicate the specificity of the hydrolysis of pharmacologically active doses of BuCh, on the one hand, of AcCh and PrCh, on the other hand, by different enzymes or the frog's rectus.Results obtained with high concentrations of D.F.P. and with association of the different anticholinesterases indicate that a maximal or nearly maximal potentiation of one of these esters is already obtained with the specific inhibitor concerned; the supplementary inhibition of the non-specific enzymes thus appears to have no or only a poor effect.     

Evolution et contrôle de l'activité de l'argininosuccinate synthétase,de l'argininosuccinase et de l'arginase du foie foetal de rat

Summary The activity of three urea-cycle enzymes, argininosuccinate synthetase, argininosuccinase and arginase have been studied in the ftal and new-born liver of rats. The activity increases with regularity between 17.5 days of pregnancy and birth in control foetuses. The lack of corticosteroid from 18.5 days of pregnancy decreases the activity of argininosuccinate synthetase. After administration of cortisol (hydrocortisone), to these 18.5-day-old foetuses lacking of corticosteroids, both activities of argininosuccinate synthetase and arginase are enhanced.

Réaction immunoallergique provoquée chez le rat par l'injection d'extraits chauffés de la tumeur de Walker

Summary When repeatly injected to Fisher Inbred rats, boiled Walker tumour extracts induced non specific and specific reactions; non specific reactions being catabolism, thymus involution, adrenal hypertrophy and perturbation of serum proteins relative distribution. The specific reactions attributable to the presence of the specific tumoral antigen in the tumour extracts are immunoallergic arthritis, liver and spleen hypertrophy, acceleration of serum albumin electrophoretic migratory rate and the apparition of the specific antigen in the liver.

Essais de solubilisation et de détoxification de la Tyrothricine

Summary As Tyrothricin —Dubos's discovery of the antibiotic agent extracted from cultures ofB. brevis — does not give true aqueous solutions and retains, in the colloïdal state of the usually employed solutions, toxic properties for polymorphonuclear blood cells, we have attempted to effect the solubilization and detoxification of this compound. Treatment with formalin in given proportions results in making it water-soluble. The action of the formalin-treated compound on blood cells suspended in Ringer's solution seems to show a loss of toxicity. Subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in mice do not give visible general toxic effects, and the experiments incite to further investigations in this direction.

Summary Because of cell membrane destruction, fluid escaping a muscle on thawing contains a large amount of proteins (myogen and globulin X). Whilst usual gradientsa, b, andc are present in the fluid, the gradientsd ande also occurring in extracts of unstimulated frog muscles are replaced by the gradientx already found in extracts of in N₂ exhausted muscles.     

Effet du fluoroacétate et des rayons X sur la teneur en acide citrique du foie de la souris

Summary In contrast to rats, male mice injected with sodium fluoroacetate accumulate citrate in their livers, whereas females do not. Whole-body irradiation reduces the level of accumulated citrate in the liver as well as in other tissues of the mouse.     

Repercussions de l'hyperthyroïdie sur le contenu total en ADN du cervelet de rat âgé de 6 et 35 jours. Effets comparés de la LT3 et de la DLT4

Summary The total cerebellar proteins RNA and DNA contents from DLT4- and LT3-treated rats was studied at 6 and 35 days of age. The effect of injections of 5 g/j of DLT4 is comparable to that of 25 g of LT3 at birth, followed by 0.5 g every 2 days. On the other hand, injection of 0.5 g of LT3 every 2 days does not induce any significant modification of the total DNA contents in the cerebellum.     

Activation concomitante par l'hétéroauxine de la résorption du corps paranucléaire ribonucléique et de la germination des zygotes chezAllomyces

Summary Heteroauxin (optimal concentration 10^–5) activates the germination of the zygotes and the dissolution of their RNA nuclear cap inAllomyces javanicus.Alkaline phosphatase has been located cytochemically in the cytoplasm surrounding the RNA nuclear cap.These new observations lead the author to postulate a relationship between the stimulating action of heteroauxin, activation of the phosphatases and awakening of the RNA-protein synthesis dynamic system during the germination of the zygotes inAllomyces.     

Action d'un inhibiteur de la carboanhydrase,l'acétazolamide,sur l'excitabilité du cortex,du thalamus et du rhinencéphale

Summary The electrical activity induced by stimulation of the cortex, diencephalon and rhinencephalon was studied in the rabbit under the influence of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, acetazolamide or Diamox. A significant decrease of the excitability was found in the diencephalon.The rapidity and the electivity of this action, as well as the blood pH variations simultaneously registered, suggest a specific inhibition of cerebral carbonic anhydrase by Diamox, although a participation of the metabolic acidosis cannot be fully excluded.     

Effets comparés de laβ-propiolactone et du formol sur les propriétés inductrices de l'organisateur chez les amphibiens

Summary -propiolactone-treated dorsal lips ofAmbystoma mexicanum are grafted in the blastocele of young gastrulas. The inducing ability of dorsal lips is not altered. These results are compared with the effects of formaldehyde which suppress the inducing ability. An interpretation of these facts is proposed. The cross-linking reactions which occur between formaldehyde and proteins may be important for the suppressing of the inductive ability by this agent.     

Action d'un hépatome ascitique du rat sur les acides nucléiques du pancréas et du rein

Summary Animals having an ascites hepatoma show an increase in the incorporation of P³² into ribonucleic acid and desoxyribonucleic acid of the pancreas, whereas no change is seen in the kidneys. The variations noted in the pancreas may be compared with those observed previously in the liver and the adrenals. It can therefore be presumed that a substance which stimulates biosynthesis or disrupts the normal metabolic balance is produced by the ascites cells.
