Astigmatic mites of the genera Schwiebea Oudms. and nanacarus oudms. from S. E. Ireland

Summary

Schwiebea hibernica sp. nov. (Acaridae) and Nanacarus manus sp. nov. (Saproglyphidae) are described and figured. Species relationships within the genus Nanacarus Ouds., are considered and a key is given for the identification of females. Nanacaroides Volgin and Mironov 1979 is synonymized with Nanacarus Oudemans 1903.     

LX.—Studies on the Onychophora.—VI. The life-history of Peripatopsis

Summary

Specimens of Notoscolex camdenensis, the type-species of Notoscolex are described for the first time since erection of the genus. The type-species is shown to have stomate megameronephridia median to micromeronephridia in posterior segments, a condition indicating that its affinities lie with a Dichogaster-Megascolides group of genera and not, as has previously been held, with a Megascolex group. Only four other species appear to be congeneric with N. camdenensis. These are endemic in New South Wales, like the type-species, or in Queensland.

The new genus Homalacanthus is proposed for “Acanthodes” cocinnus and “Acanthodes” affinis of Whiteaves. Diplacanthus horridus Woodward is redescribed.

Summary

A brief review of literature on central Indian Ocean Pseudochromidae is provided, followed by a key to central Indian Ocean species. Two new species, Chlidichthys inornatus and Pseudochromis dilectus, are described.     

First described fossil representatives of the parasitoid wasp taxa Asaphesinae n. n. and Eunotinae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae sensu lato) from Eocene Baltic amber

ABSTRACT

New Baltic amber species of Pteromalidae sensu lato are described, from two different subfamilies, Asaphesinae n. n. and Eunotinae. Asaphesinae is provided as a replacement name for Asaphinae Ashmead 1904, which is a junior homonym of the trilobite family Asaphidae Burmeister 1843. Coriotela lasallei gen. n., sp. n.. and Butiokeras costae gen. n., sp. n.. are described as the first known fossil species of Asaphesinae and Eunotinae, respectively. These species establish the minimum known age of both groups in the Eocene. Taxonomic changes are also proposed for some extant species. The genus Desantisiana Neder de Román syn. n.. is found to be a junior synonym of Notoglyptus, and its only described species is transferred as Notoglyptus jujuyensis (Neder de Román) comb. n.. The tribe Calyconotiscini, previously classified in Eunotinae, is abolished and Calyconotiscus Narendran & Saleem is transferred to Pireninae.

V.—The shell of the ostracod genus Macrocypris

Summary

Robertgurneya smithi nov. sp. is described and figured from near Adelaide; notes are given on other species (including complete figures of the female of R. ilievecensis Monard), followed by a revised key to the members of this genus, of which R. smithi is the first to be found in Australian waters.     

Haematozoa of British birds. V. Redescription of Haemoproteus majoris (Laveran) from the great tit Parus major

Summary

Haemoproteus majoris, originally described by Laveran from Parus major in France but hitherto denied specific status, is redescribed from P. major in Great Britain and designated a valid species. H machlolophi de Mello (1935) of P. xanthogenys in India is considered to be a synonym of H. majoris. The occurrence and distribution of haemoproteids in other Paridae is briefly discussed.

Summary

The Ethiopian species of the genus Agrypon Foerster (Anomaloninae) are revised and a key is given to the eight species. Four species, A. zebrinum, A. omum, A. seyrigi and A. hancocki, are described as new and three new synonymies are proposed. A. leucostomum (Cameron) is newly transferred to Agrypon. Notes on the phylogeny of the species are included.     

LXXXVII.—Periechocrinus versus Periechocrinites

Summary

Pereichocrinites is shown to be a synonym of Sagenocrinites and Periechocrinus is resurrected to replace Periechocrinites. P. costatus Austin & Austin is designated type-species of Periechocrinus.     

Taenia dinniki sp. nov. (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from the striped and the spotted hyaena in East Africa

Summary

Taenia dinniki sp. nov. is described from the small intestine of Hyaena hyaena in Tanzania and Kenya and Crocuta crocuta in Kenya. It differs from T. hyaenae, T. crocutae and T. olngojinei in combinations of characters including the number and size of the rostellar hooks, the distribution of the testes and the number of primary uterine branches.     

Miscellanea Nematodologica. VI. Echinonema australis sp. nov. from Sminthopsis crassicaudata in South Australia

Summary

Echinonema australis sp. nov. is described from Sminthopsis crassicaudata, and differs most markedly from the only other species of the genus, E. cinctum, in lacking a swollen region with intermediate sized spines immediately posterior to the three circles of large spines which occur on the extreme anterior end of the body.     

LIV.—The dentary of Tritylodon and the systematic position of the Tritylodontidæ

Summary

Among newly discovered rich skeletal material of Tritylodon the hitherto unknown lower dentition has been found. The lower jaw of Tritylodon is a compound bone. The dentary is described in detail. Tritylodon is shown to be a reptile in spite of its numerous mammalian osteological characters, and especially in spite of its upper and lower cheek-teeth, which have distinctly divided roots.     

I.—Notes on the Natural History of East Finmark

Synopsis

A new species of Argyrophylax, parasitic on the Banana Scab-Moth Nacoleia octasema Meyrick, is described and the Oriental and Australasian species of this genus are reviewed; a key is given for their identification. Six species and a subspecies hitherto placed in other genera are here assigned to Argyrophylax, and seven new combinations are established; two specific names are newly placed in synonymy.     

LXII.—Complanate alveolinids and associated foraminifera from the upper Cretaceous of the Middle East

Abstract

Pseudedomia complanata, sp. nov., Archaecyclus mid-orientalis, sp. nov., and Rotalia skourensis Pfender are described from limestones of Campanian age in the Kuwait Oil Company's Umm Gudair Well 1. The genus Pseudedomia is redefined and, on the basis of the detailed structures here described, is shown to belong to the Alveolinidae and not to the Peneroplidae; reference is also made to the occurrence of the genus in Iraq and Qatar.

Summary

Results of occasional sampling of moss, lichen, and marine sand samples from localities throughout the British Isles are provided in table form. Forty-nine species of tardigrade are recorded, three of which, Hypsibius (Hypsibius) maculatus G. Iharos, Hypsibius (Isohypsibius) tetradactyloides (Richters), and Macrobiotus islandicus Richters, are new to the British faunal list. A new variety, Hypsibius (Isohypsibius) prosostomus (Thulin) var. cambrensis is described and figured. The status of Macrobiotus areolatus Murray, Macrobiotus harmsworthi Murray, and Macrobiotus richtersi Murray is discussed and notes on egg and adult morphology included. The protozoan symphoriont Pyxidium tardigradum Van der Land is recorded on Hypsibius (Hypsibius) oberhaeuseri (Doy`ere) and Milnesium tardigradum Doy`ere living in moss and lichen.

Observations are made on regional and habitat differences in tardigrade fauna and the distribution of genera, subgenera, and species discussed; Scottish moss and lichen material containing, on average, the highest numbers of tardigrades per gram and displaying the greatest species diversity.

A new genus and species of pilargid polychaete, Litocorsa stremma, is described from silty grounds on the west coast of Scotland. Its relationship to other pilargid genera is discussed. Notes on two other pilargid species and a revised key to the genera of the Pilargidae are given.
