Summary Mice kept at low (5±1 °C) and high (35±1 °C) temperature harboured significantly lessTaenia crassiceps cysticerci than controls kept at 21±1 °C. This effect was more pronounced in heat-stressed than in cold-stressed animals and more in males than in females.  相似文献

Summary L-Aspartic acid was injected into a lateral cerebral ventricle of the sheep at ambient temperatures between 0° and 40°C. Doses of 100 or 500 nmoles·kg–1 caused a rise in heat production and/or a decrease in heat loss; rectal temperature rose. Atropine sulphate attenuated or prevented these effects.  相似文献

Radioimmunoassay was used to determine levels of the stress-inducible glucocorticoid, cortisol, circulating in the plasma of the extremely stenothermal Antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki at rest and after heat stress. Fish sampled immediately after capture (–1.9°C) had low cortisol levels (10.4±1.4 ng ml–1, mean±SEM) as did fish which were laboratory rested for 3 days. Sudden exposure to 5°C (48h) resulted in a peak cortisol value after 3 h (69.9±6.8 ng ml–1) whereas exposure to 8°C (6h) resulted in a peak value after 1 h (73.5±8.0 ng ml–1). At both temperatures levels remained significantly elevated (p<0.05) for the entire period of exposure. Increased temperature also resulted in a significant change in haemoglobin, haematocrit and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (p<0.05). Plasma lactate was significantly elevated only after exposure to 8°C (p<0.05). Plasma cortisol levels fromP. borchgrevinki are reported here for the first time and show this cryopelagic Antarctic species to have an unusual hormonal stress profile.  相似文献

Summary During periods of torporSminthopsis crassicaudata, a dasyurid marsupial, regulated its body temperature above about 16.3°C in summer and 13.0°C in winter. Animals with lower body temperatures were unable to arouse. Liver, heart and brain mitohondrial succinate:cytochrome c reductase showed a thermal transition at 16°C in summer and at 12.5°C in winter. Thus the lowest regulated body temperature was just above the temperature where changes were detected in mitochondrial respiration.Acknowledgments. Summary Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis) displayed virtually continuous electrophysiological states of sleep when hibernating at moderate ambient temperatures (22°C). Rapid-eye-movement sleep progressively diminished with the fall in body temperature so that at a body temperature of 23°C it was completely absent. At this temperature hibernation was characterized by slow wave sleep isomorphic with slow wave sleep episodes at non-hibernating (euthermic) body temperatures.Supported by National Institute of Health grants GM 23694 awarded to R.J. Summary A short photphase combined with cold-acclimation changed the shivering threshold of the pigeon from 21 to 14 °C. The change of critical temperature was also found in the temperature-metabolism curve. A long photophase both alone and combined with warm-acclimation induced a reduction of body temperature to a lower level (about 2°C) at all ambient temperatures, ranging from 5 40°C.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory tests have been performed, on the behavior of the jellyfishPelagia noctiluca as a function of the water temperature. It has been found that the usual contractions of the umbrella are almost completely missing at 6°C; they begin to appear at about 7–8°C and they reach frequencies of about 10 and 40 per min at 11 and 15°C respectively. An ambient temperature of about 11°C appears to be a threshold value below which this kind of medusa ceases to move actively and sinks, while at higher temperatures it gradually begins to shift, showing a positive thermotropism in the presence of temperature gradients greater than about 0.01 °C/cm.This work was supported by grant No. 80.00748.88 from the National Research Coucil of Italy (CNR).  相似文献

Summary The polypeptide mastoparan, isolated from the venom of the oriental Hornet,Vespa orientalis, induces hypothermia in white mice 15 minutes after its intraperitoneal injection. The hypothermic effect is induced by mastoparan obtained from different hornet and wasp venoms. The normal murine core temperature is lowered by mastoparan from 38°C to as faor as 33°C. This lowering lasts for one hour and is reversible.  相似文献

Summary Exposure of adult male rats to increased temperature of 33±1°C for 3 and 10 days brought about decreases in pineal N-acetyltransferase activity. These and previous findings of pineal HIOMT inhibition under similar conditions support the postulation of a possible thermoregulatory role for the pineal gland.  相似文献

Summary In the Mediterranean field cricket,Gryllus bimaculatus, reproduction is controlled by temperature and the corpus allatum (CA) hormone JH III. In CA of females reared at 24°12°C(168 h) (high reproduction rate) a first peak in JH III synthesis is reached about 4 days earlier than in those of 20°C females (low reproduction rate). Furthermore, in 20°C animals CA activity is low during the entire oviposition period, whereas at 24°12°C high CA activity is found during this period of adult life. The results indicate a stimulation of CA activity and reproduction by thermoperiods around a constant low temperature.Supported by the DFG (SFB 87 A 4).  相似文献

Summary Gerbils kept at high (35°C) temperature harbored a significantly largerEchinococcus multilocularis cyst biomass than those kept at room (21°C) and low (5°C) temperature. Parasite induced adrenomegaly was observed in all temperature groups.Acknowledgments. I am indebted to Miss Marianne Hardy and Mr Terry Durham for their excellent technical assistance.  相似文献

Summary Remak's nerve in the chicken was examined ultrastructurally and electrophysiologically to determine the characteristics of fibers in the nerve trunk. The ratio of unmyelinated fibers to myelinated ones was 1111. The mean number of unmyelinated fibers was 3555±232 (SEM, n=5) and they had a mean diameter of 0.502±0.034 (SEM) m. The compound action potential consisted almost entirely of a large diphasic waveform which had a mean peak conduction velocity of 0.62±0.031 (SEM, n=5) m·s–1 at 37°C.  相似文献

Summary (1) Tissue slices of the liver and pieces of the skin of summer-frogs were incubated at 47.5°C for 30–150 min. Their respiration was measured during this incubation period and thereafter at a temperature of 37.5°C.(2) As a sign of an irreversible inactivation of the enzymes, the average respiration was inhibited. However, after certain periods of incubation at 47.5°C, over-shoot phenomena in the O2-uptake at the temperature of 37.5°C were seen.  相似文献

Summary In the realm of human circadian rhythms, the masking effect is defined as the change in the course of deep body temperature induced by changes in the degree of physical activity, or by the alteration between sleep and wake. This effect is particularly obvious during internal desynchronization where the rhythms of deep body temperature, and the sleep-wake sleep-wake sleep cycle — i.e. one of the masking factors — run with different periods.Every sleep onset is accompanied by a rapid drop, and wake onset by a rapid rise in deep body temperature, each one with an overshoot of about 50% of the steady state variations. When rhythms are calculated, with the dominant temperature period as the screening period, exclusively from data obtained during sleep episodes, on the one hand, and from those obtained exclusively during wake, on the other, two average cycles emerge: the sleep temperature curve and the wake temperature curve. Both run in parallel but are separated by the masking effcct. As derived from many experiments, the mean masking effect amounts to 0.28±0.06°C. The masking effect also depends to some extent on the phase of the temperature rhtthm; it is larger than average around the temperature maximum and during the descending phase of the temperature cycle, where the alertness commonly is highest and the probability to sleep, in general, and the REM sleep propensity, in particular, are smaller than average. This also can be interpreted to indicate that the sleep temperature curve is phase advanced relative to the wake temperature curve; this, on the average, by 0.9±0.3 h.If the individually determined amount of masking is added to the temperature data obtained during sleep, or substracted from the temperature data obtained during wake, a temperature curve emerges that can be though of as being purified of the masking effect. Analyses of this artificial curve allow estimation of that part of the internal interactions uninfluenced by the masking effect. On the average, about half of the amount of interaction between the rhythm of sleep-wake and that of deep body temperature is explained by the masking effect, whereas the other half is oscillatory interaction. Both types of interaction are inherent and inseparable parts of the circadian clock mechanism, as can be deduced from model considerations.  相似文献

Summary The electrical dark conductivity of several tocopherols has been measured and found to be analogous to that of organic semiconductors. Conductivity at 25°C varies between 10–14 and 10–11 –1 cm–1. The temperature dependence of the tocopherols yields a thermal activation energy of 1.6 ± 0.15 eV for most of the substances.  相似文献

Male rats exposed to the cold (4°C) for five or ten days exhibited modifications in their thyroid state, as documented by increases in serum thyroid hormone levels, to which differently graded modifications of heart weight/body weight ratio, heart rate, and resting metabolic rate were associated. The values of the above mentioned thyroid state indicators returned to those of the control when the animals, kept at cold for ten days, were re-exposed to room temperature (24°C) for an additional 10 days. The configuration of action potentials, recorded in vitro at 26°C from fibres of anterior papillary muscles, was different in control rats of different age and was affected by prolonged cold exposure. In fact, the action potential duration (APD) increased after ten days of cold exposure. In the re-exposed group the APD was not different from that of the controls. Such a pattern was not significantly modified when the stimulation frequency increased from 1 Hz to 5 Hz. The above results suggest that in cold exposure, as in experimental hyperthyroidism, thyroid hormone might exert a cardiac chronotropic effect by modifying heart electrophysiological properties. Thus thyroid hormone should play a basic role during the exposure to cold environment, stimulating the body metabolism and increasing heart rate as a response to the requirement for greater tissue perfusion.  相似文献

Summary The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T3 level was affected by temperature (25°C<7°C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T4 level was affected by photoperiod (short day < long day) at 25°C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T4 level under short photoperiod at 25°C. Thus, higher plasma T4 level under long photoperiod at 25°C might be induced by testosterone.  相似文献

Summary Control fish acclimated at 21°C learned to swim upright following the attachment of floats to their ventral surfaces, while fish acclimated at both 5°C and 33°C failed to learn the swimming skill. Fish previously acclimated at 5°C and then transferred to 21°C 48 h before the task, learnt the swimming skill better than the control fish, but fish acclimated at 33°C and transferred to 21°C failed to acquire the new skill. Acclimation temperature, therefore, significantly modifies the learning behaviour of fish.  相似文献

Summary Histamine content in the rat hypothalamus was lower at 4°C and higher at 31°C compared to that at 21°C. Pretreatment with -fluoromethylhistidine, a suicide inhibitor of histidine decarboxylase, attenuated both the increased level of hypothalamic histamine and rat adaptive behavior at 31°C. Increase of histamine content in the hypothalamus appears to be an important factor contributing to rat adaptive behavior to high environmental temperature.  相似文献

Summary In photoperiodic adult diapause ofDrosophila testacea, the critical daylength fell between 14 and 16 h at 15°C, but between 13 and 14 h at 18°C. None entered diapause at LD 1014 and LL at 23°C. This species quantitatively responded to daylengths around the critical daylength in the process of diapause induction. The length of the sensitive period seems to change with temperature.  相似文献
