NSFC-JST Workshop on Energy Saving Held in Beijing

<正>Jointly organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC) and Japan Science and Technology Agency(JST),a workshop on"Energy Recycling Technology for Waste and Exhaust Heat"was held in Beijing on August 30-31. NSFC Vice President He Minghong and JST Executive Director Akira Takamatsu were at the meeting and delivered opening remarks respectively.More than 20 scientists from China and Japan attended the meeting. Populus euphratica, a Tolerant Model but Endangered Arborescent Species

Populus euphratica is a most tolerant arborescent species to abiotic stress. It can adapt to extreme conditions, ranging from flood to atmosphere extremely dry, hot from +54℃ to -45℃, and from normal soil to the soil with very high salt concentration (to 2～5%) although being a nonhalophyte. Ho wever, the natural stands of P. euphratica have been shrinking tremendously for the past decades and some populations are facing the fate of extinction. The pre servation of existing resources should be carried out as a burning issue. In par allel, P. euphratica could be taken as a model plant to explore the molecular me chanism of abioticstress tolerance and to exploit its tolerant genes due to it s smaller genome and easy molecular manipulation. The measures for preservation, germplasma exploitation, tolerance mechanism exploration and resource utiliza tion were also discussed in this paper.     

Prof. Chen Yiyu Met with the Director General for Research from the French Ministry of Research

On July 20, 2005, Prof. Chen Yiyu, President of NSFC, met with the delegation from the French Min- istry of Research, headed by its Director General for Research, Ms. Elisabeth Giacobino. Palaeobotany and the Evolution of the Monsoon in China

From October 2009 to October 2011,I worked as a fellow of the International Young Scientist Program from the Chinese Academy of Sciences,at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology,the Chinese Academy of Sciences.My research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. My research focused on the study of Cenozoic palaeoenvironments in China based on fossil plants. On May 31 and June 1, 2005, the 2nd NSFC-JST workshop on S&T for Environmental Conservation andConstruction of a Society with Less Environmental Burden was held in Tokyo. Challenges and Opportunities in Urban Meteorology Research and Forecast

An international workshop on urban meteorology: observation and modeling, was jointly held by the Institute of Urban Meteorology (China) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (US) in Beijing, October, 2004. The workshop was inten ded to share recent progress in urban meteorological research, discuss issues re lated to research and development priorities faced by diverse Chinese institutio ns, and explore collaboration opportunities between Chinese and US research inst itutions. This article summarizes the major issues discussed at the workshop, in cluding observation on urban boundary layer, urban landuse modeling, socioecon omic impacts of weather and climates, and air quality in urban environment. It i ncludes recommendations for future urban meteorology observational and modeling research, and potential collaborative opportunities between China and US.     

President Chen Yiyu Met with Russian Delegation

On Jan.8,2007,NSFC President Chen Yiyu met with a Russian delegation headed by Academician Michail I.Kuzmin, Director of Irkutsk Science Center,Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences. Academician Kuzmin first conveyed the best wishes to leaders of NSFC from President of Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Foundation for Basic Research.Then the two sides briefed respectively on the research on Lake Baikal and the Russia-China joint research expedition in 2005 and 2006, as well as the joint research in the future.     

Lipid homeostasis and metabolic disorders

I.ipid homeostasis is referred to as the maintenance of stable levels of plasma and cellular lipids and is the result of coordinated regulation of various lipid metabolic pathways. Disruption of lipid homeostasis of- ten results in the development of metabolic disorders including obesity, diabetes and fatty liver formation. With the support from NSFC, Dr. I.i Peng＇s laboratory from Tsinghua University has discovered that CI- DE proteins （Cidea, Cideb and Fsp27） are important regulators of lipid homeostasis and has delineated no- vel molecular pathways in controlling the development of metabolic disorders.     

Panel Meeting for A3 Foresight Program 2008 held in Hangzhou

Jointly organized by the Bureau of International Cooperation,Department of Engineering & Material Sciences and Department of Mathematical & Physical Sciences of NSFC,the panel evaluation meeting for A3 Foresight Program for the year 2008 was held in Hangzhou from May 28 to 30,2008.     

Long-Range Topological Order in Metallic Glass

In June 17th issue of Science,Professor Jiang Jianzhong of Department of Material Sciences,Zhejiang University and his colleagues published a paper titled "Long-Range Topological Order in Metallic Glass". Prof.Jiang has received sustained support from NSFC since 2003. This article was co-authored by an international group of 9 researchers. According to the article,glass lacks the long-range periodic order that characterizes a crystal.In the Ce75Al25 metallic glass(MG),however,they discovered a long-range topological order corresponding to a single crystal of indefinite length.Structural examinations confirm that the MG is truly amorphous,isotropic, and unstrained,yet under 25 gigapascals hydrostatic pressures,every segment of a centimeter-     

NSFC Former President Tang Ao-qing Passed Away

NSFC Former President Tang Ao-qing, a distinguished chemist and senior member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed away at 11：15 on July 15, 2008, aged 93.

On May 12,2008,NSFC's Department of Management Sciences held a meeting to initiate a program on Disaster Impact on China's Economy and the Emergency Response.Nine research groups were granted in this program through the Department Director's Fund.

NSFC Delegation Visits Northern European Countries

A NSFC delegation headed by Prof. Li Zhuqi, Vice President, paid a visit to Northern Europe from August 19 to August 31, 2003. The delegation visited the Research Council of Norway, the Academy of Finland, the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning, some international organizations, universities and research institutes.
