Volatiles from clover headHypera meles (Fab.) and alfalfaH. postica (Gyllenhal) weevils: search for pheromones

Summary Volatile fractions of the clover head,Hypera meles (Fab.), and alfalfa,Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), weevils contained three of four boll weevil,Anthonomus grandis (Boh.), pheromone components, (Z)-3,3-dimethylcyclohexane ^1,-ethanol and (Z)- and (E)-3,3-dimethylcyclohexane-^1,-acetaldehyde. Also found were eight oxygenated monoterpenes, previously identified as precursors and intermediates of the boll weevil pheromones.     

Total synthesis of orellinine,a minor toxic component of the fungusCortinarius orellanus fries

Summary The 3,3,4,4-tetrahydroxy-2,2-bipyridyl-N-oxide has been synthesized by dealkylation of the corresponding tetramethyl derivative. The chemical properties of this compound are identical to those reported for the minor fungal toxin ofCortinarius orellanus, orellinine.This work is part of the Tesi di Laurea of Miss Cinzia Pierucci.     

ω10-Lipoxygenase products of α-linolenic acid are esterified to phospholipids inHydra vulgaris

We have recently reported the occurrence of 9(R)-hydroxy-, 9(R)-hydroperoxy- and 9-keto-octadeca-10E,12Z,15Z-trienoic acids (9-HOTrE, 9-HPOTrE and 9-KOTrE) inHydra vulgaris, and their biosynthesis from -linolenic acid (-LA) through the action of an enantioselective 10(R)-lipoxygenase (10-LO). Here we describe the finding of these -LA metabolites as esters to the 2-position of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and, in trace amounts, phosphatidylinositol. Small amounts of a compound co-eluting with an authentic standard of 9(R)-hydroxy-octadeca-10E,12Z-dienoic acid, a metabolite potentially derived from the action of 10-LO on linoleic acid, were also found esterified with phospholipids. Since direct peroxidation of membrane lipids has been described, experiments were aimed at establishing whether -LA metabolite-containing phospholipids could originate, inH. vulgaris, from either spontaneous or 10-LO-catalyzed oxidation of phospholipid-bound -LA. Incubation of either unlabelled or radiolabelled PUFA-containing phosphoglycerides withH. vulgaris 10-LO did not result in their peroxidation. This suggests that -LA and LA metabolites are incorporated into glycerophospholipids after their formation by 10-LO, and that, as in mamals, membrane phospholipids may serve as a reservoir for these bioactive compounds. This is the first example in an invertebrate species of lipoxygenase products esterified to phosphoglycerides.     

The toxicity of twoBacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins to gypsy moth larvae is inversely related to the affinity of binding sites on midgut brush border membranes for the toxins

Summary The-endotoxin fromBacillus thuringiensis subspecieskurstaki strain HD1-9 is almost 400 times more potent than the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 as a gypsy moth larvicide. The two-endotoxins compete for a high-affinity binding site on the brush border membrane of larval gypsy moth midguts. The affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 is much greater than the affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD1-9.

Single amino acid substitutions insn-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase allozymes fromDrosophila virilis

Summary The amino acid sequence was compared among the three allelic variants (allozymes) ofsn-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase inD. virilis, which are detected by one-dimensional electrophoresis. The GPDH^f variant was different from the GPDH^m by only one substitution of 68-lysine for asparagine; GPDH^s differed from GPDH^m by substitution of 127-glycine for arginine. No electrophoretically silent substitutions were found in a total of 352 amino acid residues.     

Independent responses of two fruit characters to developmental regulation inMicroseris douglasii (Asteraceae,Lactuceae)

Summary The hairy achenes and yellow achenes characters are expressed only in peripheral fruits onMicroseris capitula. Segregation in interstrain hybrid D37 shows that the genes responsible for these characters respond independently to developmental regulation.Supported by grants Ba 536/7-7 from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and DEB 80-09427 from the National Science Foundation.     

The karyotype ofMicrotus cabrerae Thomas,another species with giant sex chromosomes

Summary The karyotype ofMicrotus cabrerae, a species endemic to Spain, is described. It comprises 2n=54 chromosomes, with a fundamental number of 64, and with very large sex chromosomes. An evolutionary relationship between this species andM. chrotorrhinus is suggested.     

Can we predict the mating pattern ofDrosophila females from the sperm length distribution in males?

Summary In order to test the validity of the prediction of the mating pattern of females from the sperm length distribution in males, three species ofDrosophila were analysed. Males in the three species are equally polygynous but females differ in the level of polyandry. A low recurrence polyandry is observed in the sperm dimorphic speciesD. affinis while a high recurrence polyandry is observed in the sperm monomorphic speciesD. latifasciaeformis andD. littoralis. These results are consistent with the hypothesis proposed previously that sperm dimorphism in males can only be maintained by a selective alternative in females (i.e. facultative female polygamy), whereas a stricter mating system (e.g., obligatory polyandry) should only result in sperm monomorphism irrespective of the absolute value of sperm length.     

Differential expression and dosage compensation of theα-amylase gene inDrosphila miranda

Summary The-amylase gene ofDrosophila miranda is located on the X²-and on the neo-Y-chromosome, both developing sex chromosomes. Crosses between strains carrying different electrophoretically distinguishable alleles of the-amylase gene were performed. Females of the F₁ offspring showed the expected heterozygosity, while the males proved to be hemizygous for this locus. Only the gene on the X²-chromosome is expressed, whereas the corresponding gene on the neo-Y-chromosome is not. Estimates of the-amylase activity in crude homogenates of male and female flies suggest strongly that the-amylase gene is dosage compensated inD. miranda. In contrast to this situation, in all otherDrosophila species the-amylase allele is autosomal and hence not dosage compensated.Acknowledgments. We would like to thank Betty C. Characterization of 17β-estradiol 3-(β-D-glucopyranoside) and 17-(α-D-glucopyranoside) as the metabolites of 17β-estradiol in the cultured ovaries of the silkworm,Bombyx mori

Summary The structures of the metabolites formed upon incubation of 17-estradiol with the ovaries of silkworm,Bombyx mori, have been determined as 17-estradiol 3-(-D-glucopyranoside) (1) and 17-(-D-glucopyranoside) (2) by spectroscopic means.     

Allozyme polymorphism and linkage disequilibrium ofAdh and α-Gpdh loci in wine cellar and field populations ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Over three years, theAdh and -Gpdh loci have been studied in two cellar populations ofDrosophila melanogaster and in two field populations which were each near to one of the cellars. Analyses of gene frequencies indicate that the divergence among subpopulations is greater in theAdh locus than in the -Gpdh locus. Selection for or againstAdh ^S allele acting on theIn(2L)t inversion influences of the -Gpdh alleles. This phenomenon may contribute to explain the maintenance of theAdh and -Gpdh polymorphism and of theIn(2L)t inversion.

Summary (1) The adrenalin of the frog heart was found to be localized mainly in the granular fraction (100,000g). After pretreatment with -methyldopa (-MD), the heart also contained -methyldopamine, -methylnoradrenalin, and -methyladrenalin. (2) -MD caused a maximal expansion of the melanophores. This action was counteracted byl-dopa, which per se caused a contraction of the melanophores. After pretreatment with -MD the skin contained besides adrenalin also -methyldopamine and -methyladrenalin. In addition also 5-hydroxytryptophan expanded the melanophores.     

On the host-symbiont-cycle of a leafhopper (Euscelis plebejus) endosymbiosis

Summary In the host-symbiont-cycle ofEuscelis plebejus and its bacterial symbionts each of both symbionts (a and t) appears in an infection form during the intraovarial transmission (adult female) as well as during the entrance into the mycetocytes (embryo) and in a vegetative form during the remaining time of the cycle.This work was supported in part by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to ProfessorK. Endogenous suppression of pheromone production in virgin female moths

Summary Sexual receptivity generally is reduced in moths after mating. We found that even in virginHeliothis zea females the titer of pheromone declines after the third night of adult life, although the number of eggs laid increases. Reduction in pheromone titer is not due to reduced amounts of pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide. We have discovered that a substance present in the bursa, ovaries and hemolymph of senescing virgins suppresses pheromone production. A similar factor was found in 2-day-old mated females indicating that both virgin and mated females use this factor to suppress pheromone production.     

A study of the mechanism of polymyxin M inactivation

Secreted oleanolic acid on the cuticleOlea europaea (Oleaceae); a chemical barrier to fungal attack

Summary The leaf of the bitter oliveOlea europaea (Oleaceae) is heavily coated by almost pure oleanolic acid, which forms part of a multichemical defense against fungal attack.We thank Mr K. A. Hoelmer for taking the electron micrographs and also Professor T. Kamikawa for NMR measurements.     

Cardenolide glycosides from the adults and eggs ofChrysolina fuliginosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Besides the known sarmentogenin 3-O--D-allopyranoside (1) and digitoxigenin-3-O-[-D-xylopyranosyl-(14)-2, 3-di-O-acetyl--D-allopyranoside] (4), four new cardiac glycosides (2, 3, 5 and6) have been isolated from the defensive glands of adults ofChrysolina fuliginosa. The structures of the new compounds were determined by¹H NMR at 600 MHz and FABMS. Compounds1–6, present in the adults ofC. fuliginosa, have also been identified in the eggs.     

Carbohydrase and esterase activity in the gut of larvalCallosobruchus maculatus

Summary Carbohydrase activity has been demonstrated in homogenates of the alimentary tracts of late instar larvae ofC. maculatus:-D galactosidase, -D glucosidase and N-acetyl-D glucosaminidase activities were comparable and significantly greater than -D galactosidase,-D glucosidase and -D mannosidase. The effects of pH and substrate concentration are reported. The presence and changes in pattern of non-specific esterase activity in larval and adult gut homogenates is also described.
