This paper investigates the existence of a fundamental link between two disciplines that emerged during last few decades: complexity science and advanced engineering. During this time many industries, especially those related to the high-tech end of technological development, have faced the problem of increasing complexity of design, production and operation. Industrial projects have grown to become multidisciplinary, tightly interconnected, costly and difficult to control and predict. Two trends can be identified in this respect: one is the consistent effort of systems engineering in reducing the uncertainties of complex industrial operations and the other is the effort undertaken in complexity studies to account for uncertainties present in the real world.
In this work, we provide a brief overview of recent developments in advanced engineering and give a consistent interpretation of technological evolution from the perspective of complexity science in general and complex competitive systems (CCS) in particular. CCS is a general framework that was recently developed for analysis of complex systems involving competition. Transitivity of the decision-making process and the cyclic nature of technological progress are considered. Correctness of intransitive decisions is inherently relativistic: the same decisions can be seen as correct or incorrect when considered from different perspectives. When treated simplistically, intransitivity may seem to be illogical but, nevertheless, it is common in nature and needs to be studied. CCS provides a formalised scientific framework for analysis of intransitivity and establishes the existence of an important connection linking complexity and uncertainty with intransitivity. Implications of intransitivity for engineering decision-making and strategic planning are considered in the context of CCS. A working example of intransitivity in competition between major car mantifacturers is presented.  相似文献

Since its inception,Systems Engineering(SE)has developed as a distinctive discipline,and there has been significant progress in this field in the past two decades.Compared to other engineering disciplines,SE is not affirmed by a set of underlying fundamental propositions,instead it has emerged as a set of best practices to deal with intricacies stemming from the stochastic nature of engineering complex systems and addressing their problems.Since the existing methodologies and paradigms(dominant patterns of thought and concepts)of SE are very diverse and somewhat fragmented.This appears to create some confusion regarding the design,deployment,operation,and application of SE.The purpose of this paper is 1)to delineate the development of SE from 1926-2017 based on insights derived from a histogram analysis,2)to discuss the different paradigms and school of thoughts related to SE,3)to derive a set of fundamental attributes of SE using advanced coding techniques and analysis,and 4)to present a newly developed instrument that could assess the performance of systems engineers.More than Two hundred and fifty different sources have been reviewed in this research in order to demonstrate the development trajectory of the SE discipline based on the frequency of publication.  相似文献

Based on the homotopy analysis method,a general analytic technique for strongly nonlinear problems,a Maple package of automated derivation(ADHO) for periodic nonlinear oscillation systems is presented.This Maple package is valid for periodic oscillation systems in rather general,and can automatically deliver the accurate approximations of the frequency ui and the mean of motion 5 of a nonlinear periodic oscillator.Based on the homotopy analysis method which is valid even for highly nonlinear problems,this Maple package can give accurate approximate expressions even for nonlinear oscillation systems with strong nonlinearity.Besides,the package is user-friendly:One just needs to input a governing equation and initial conditions,and then gets satisfied analytic approximations in few seconds.Several different types of examples are given in this paper to illustrate the validity of this Maple package.Such kind of package provides us a helpful and easy-to-use tool in science and engineering to analyze periodic nonlinear oscillations.And it is free to download the electronic version of this Maple package from the address "http://numericaltank.sjtu.edu.cn/sjliao.htm" once the paper is published publicly.  相似文献
