Odours play a very important role in the life of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera. In the present paper, a review is given of the current knowledge of morphology, development and function of the olfactory system in larval and adult moths and butterflies. Research regarding both the antennal and accessory olfactory pathways, as well as both the pheromone and the host odour detecting systems, is reviewed.  相似文献

Summary The suitability of 6 different plants as natural food forHeliothis armigera was tested. The different biological aspects ofH. armigera were taken in consideration. Kidney bean pods and cotton plant leaves were the most successful host plants tested as they increased the pupal weight and the reproductive potential of the resulting moths, followed by lettuce, which decreased the larval duration remarkably.  相似文献

Summary The simple ears of months have responded evolutionarily to the varied levels of selection pressure exerted upon them by insectivorous bats. While frequency-matched (syntonic) bats exert the primary pressure that determines where a sypatric moth's best frequency (BF) lies, there are bats that echolocate in mismatched (allotonic) bandwidths forming selection pressures strong enough to warrant increased secondary sensitivity at these frequencies. It is unknown what neural mechanism is used by these insects to broaden their audiograms but for some neotropical moths, external hearing aids provide a mechanical means of obtaining this sensitivity. Recent studies have uncovered social uses for auditory systems in certain moths and these requirements may provide additional selection pressure. Auditory conditions exist in certain moths that should provide a means to study the evolution of this sensory system from its mechanoreceptor origins to its degeneration in the absence of bat predation.  相似文献

When infested by herbivorous mites, cotton seedlings produce volatile cues that elicit attraction of predatory mites. Experiments were carried out to elucidate how downwinduninfested conspecific seedlings are affected by these volatiles. It was found that the rate of oviposition of herbivorous mites was reduced on seedlings exposed to volatiles from infested seedlings. Moreover, predatory mites were attracted by exposeduninfested seedlings. These results strongly suggest that uninfested plants are better protected against herbivore attack when exposed to airborne chemicals released by their infested neighbours.  相似文献

Summary Trace components contributed significantly to the potency of synthetic sex attractant lures for males of many species of Noctuidae. Improved synthetic blends for 12 moths includingEuxoa ochrogaster andTrichoplusia ni, and new lure blends for 10 moths are described. Summary Substitution of fluorine for the aldehydic hydrogen provides behaviorally active, chemically reactive pheromone mimics. In male moths of the tobacco budwormHeliothis virescens, Z9–14:Acf and Z11–16:Acf cause hyperactivity and irreversible extension of the genitalia in over 80% of treated moths. Summary Experiments were carried out to test the effects of relative humidity on prepupae and pupae of the Silkworm,Bombyx mori L., at 250 C. It was found that:(1) duration of prepupal + pupal stages is the same at all relative humidities between 7 and 100%;(2) mortality seems unaffected in all these humidity conditions;(3) moths obtained in percentages between 55 and 100% R. H. have the same average wet weight; moths obtained under dryer conditions have a lower average weight (expressed in percentage of initial weights of prepupae);(4) pupae extracted from their cocoons develop as quickly and as well as pupae in their cocoons.  相似文献

The relationship between juvenile hormone and ecdysteroid titers during the early stage of the last larval instar of the silkworm,Bombyx mori, was examined in this study. When larvae were fed 20-hydroxyecdysone-supplemented mulberry leaves throughout the last larval instar, 100% underwent supernumerary larval molting instead of metamorphosis. The application of juvenile hormone mimic during the early last instar did not induce supernumerary larval molting, but did delay metamorphosis. Temporal and quantitative ecdysteroid titer measurements revealed that in normal larvae the titers maintained very low levels (3–12 ng/ml) during the early stage of the last instar; however, in 20-hydroxyecdysone-treated larvae, levels ranging from 24 to 45 ng/ml were detected, and a major peak (246 ng/ml) was observed on day 6. These results show that very low ecdysteroid titer levels during the early stage of the last larval instar may play an important role in initiating decreases in juvenile hormone titers as well as in directing metamorphosis.  相似文献

Inhaled allergens from house dust, mites or animal danders activate human complement in vitro by engaging the C1-component through a non-antibody-dependent mechanism. These earlier findings are extended by showing that the allergenic components in extracts of Parietaria pollen are almost equally potent complement activators as those from house dust or mites. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that haemolytic complement consumption by the Parietaria allergens and their enzymic fragments is most likely related to post-translational side-chains comprising flavonoid derivatives. These adsorbed and/or peptide-bound tannin-like structures may also explain the exceptional stability of the high- and low-molecular mass allergenic components in Parietaria pollen extracts. Summary Eight hymenopterous and 1 dipterous species, all endoparasitic in eggs, larvae, or pupae of small ermine moths (Yponomeuta) were investigated for their allozyme variation at 3–29 loci. The mean heterozygosity level of the hymenopterous species is one-third of that of the dipterous species. Zymogram patterns of the parasite larvae do not interfere with those of the host.  相似文献

Summary Aldehyde dependent bacterial luciferases respond quantitatively to ng quantities of aldehyde pheromones from insects. The luminescent response is the basis for a quantitative assay used to analyse sex pheromone from several sources including individual female moths.This investigation was supported by a U.S.D.A. Summary Duration of the feeding stage and corresponding weight increase during the last larval instar of the codling moth,Laspeyresia pomonella, are controlled by JH. Larvae reared under short day conditions have a relatively high titer of JH during the last larval instar and enter diapause as mature larvae. They feed longer and become heavier than larvae reared under long day conditions, which have no JH during the last larval instar and pupate when mature. By application of the JH mimetic Altosid® during the first 2 or 3 days of the last larval instar, the duration of feeding activity of larvae reared under respectively long and short day conditions was prolongated and the larvae became significantly heavier. The feeding behaviour could only be influenced by the juvenoid as long as the feeding activity of the larvae had not yet ceased.  相似文献

The response of the final instar larvae ofG. mellonella to topical application of the non-steroidal ecdysone mimic, RH 5849, was age-related as well as dose-dependent. In young final instar larvae, moderate doses of RH 5849 induced perfect supernumerary larval moults, but doses equal to and higher than 8.5 μg per larva caused premature formation of larval cuticle and were lethal. Application of RH 5849 significantly increased allatotropic activity of the brain, and also activated synthesis of juvenile hormone (JH) by the corpora cardiaca/corpora allata complex. Simultaneous application of RH 5849 and FMev, a potent inhibitor of JH synthesis, to young final instar larvae lowered the incidence of perfect supernumerary larval moults. We conclude that the effect of RH 5849 on the developmental programme inG. mellonella is mediated by the corpora allata.  相似文献

Summary Larval firefly midgut extracts and larval firefly hemolymph extracts were found to produce a potent inhibitory effect when applied directly to the heart of a terrestrial mollusc. Summary The role of host plants in the synthesis and release of lepidopteran sex pheromones is examined. Females synthesise pheromones de novo and pheromone quality is not markedly influenced by larval food sources. However, host plants may have a significant effect on different physiological and behavioural parameters associated with pheromone production. Males in some species of Nymphalidae and Arctiidae use secondary plant compounds, such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids, as a pheromone precursor. In such cases these plant compounds serve an additional role, such as protection against predation, and may reflect potential male reproductive investment. In the one instance where the effect of larval host plants on the de novo synthesis of a male sex pheromone was examined, larval nutrition did not alter either the quality or quantity of the hairpencil contents.  相似文献

Summary Embryos of the leafhopperEuscelis plebejus Fall. deprived of their intracellular symbionts are known to develop larval mycetomes of apparently normal topography late in embryogenesis.
