Distribution of cadmium,zinc and copper in the musselMytilus edulis. Existence of cadmium-binding proteins similar to metallothioneins

Summary The study of the distribution of Cd, Zn and Cu in homogenates of mussels has shown that Zn and Cu are principally associated with high mol. wt. proteins. The same distribution is observed for Cd in untreated mussels, but in Cd chronically intoxicated animals, the metal is principally bound to low mol. wt. proteins synthesized in response to the uptake of the cation and similar to metallothioneins of vertebrates.This research was carried out in participation in the Belgian National Research and Development Program on the Environment-Water-Sea Project-Office of the Prime Minister-Interministerial Commission for Science Policy and Programmation.I am grateful to Prof.A. Zusammenfassung 3-[4-(p-Fluorphenyl)-1,2,3,6-te-trahydro-1-pyridyl]-1-[1-(2-hydroxyaethyl)-5-methyl-4-pyrazolyl]-1-propanon (I, CIBA 4416/B-Go) senkt bei normotonischen und hypertonischen Tieren den Blutdruck. Die Drucksenkung kann hauptsächlich auf die periphere Vasodilatation sowie auf die Vasomotorenzentren bezogen werden. Ausserdem wirkt CIBA 4416/B-Go adrenolytisch.

Attempt to alter antigenic structure of normal tissues by treatment with dimethyl-triazeno-imidazole-carboxamide in vivo

Summary The antigenic structure of normal skin and spleen cells has been investigated following in vivo treatment with the compound DIC. In experiments involving skin grafting in the normal and sensitized host, cross sensitization with a DIC-antigenic lymphoma and³H-thymidine incorporation by lymphocytes cultured with DIC-treated spleen cells, new antigens on DIC-treated tissues were not demonstrated.Research supported in part by Contract No. 74.00237.04 from C.N.R., Rome.We wish to thank Mr.C. Tur Interpretation des genetischen Mechanismus wurden 2 geschlechtsgebundene Loci angenommen, als bisher angenommen wurde, was für einen älteren Mechanismus bei Apiden spricht.

Synthesis of marinobufagin and marinobufotoxin from telecinobufagin

Zusammenfassung Telecinobufagin (I) wurde in Marinobufagin (IVa) und in Marinobufotoxin (V) übergeführt. Hauptreaktionsschritte: Umsetzung des Olefins II zum Halohydrin III mit anschliessender Epoxydierung (IIIIVa). Das so erhaltene Marinobufagin (IVa) wurde mit Arginin-monohydrochlorid unter Verwendung der MCA-Technik zu Marinobufotoxin (V) kondensiert.

Zusammenfassung Aus Arbeiterinnen der AmeiseMonomorium pharaonis (L.) wurde 5-Methyl-3-butyl-octahydroindolizin isoliert. Dieses Pheromon übt eine starke Lockstoffwirkung auf die Arbeiterinnen dieser Ameisenart aus. Die Struktur wurde durch Spektral-analyse und Synthese aufgeklärt. Unseres Wissens ist dies das erste Pheromon aus Insekten mit dem Indolizingerüst.

Antineoplastic agents 32. The pseudoguaianolide helenalin

Zusammenfassung Aus der PflanzeHelenium autummnale (Familie compositae) wurde ein alkolischer Extrakt gewonnen, der cytotoxische und antileukämische Aktivität zeigte und die Helenalin (I) als wirksame Komponente enthielt. Die Behandlung von Mäusen, die Träger von P 388 lymphocytischer Leukämie waren, ergab eine beachtliche (T/C 220) Verlängerung ihrer Lebenserwartung. Die Substanz zeigte ausserdem einen wachstumshemmenden Einfluss auf das Walker 256 Karzinom. Helenalin ist das erste Sesquiterpen vom Pseudoguaianolid Typ, welches in vivo eine solche antineoplastische Aktivität zeigt.

Pre- and post-partum plasma amine oxidase differences in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Summary Plasma amine oxidase activity increased from 23.4 nmol/ml/h during pregnancy to 49.5 nmol/ml/h during an extended post partum period in 10 rhesus monkeys. Comparison with non-pregnant control monkeys sampled at similar times indicated that the significant differences were in the extended post partum period.We thank Dr.C. H. Conaway and Dr.J. D. Fluoride and calcium levels in the aorta

Zusammenfassung Fluor- und Kalziumwerte in verkalktem Aortengewebe wurden mit denen von makroskopisch normal erscheinendem Aortengewebe verglichen. Der Fluorgehalt der Aorta verschiedener Personen zeigte grosse individuelle Schwankungen, die unabhängig vom Kalziumgehalt waren. Eine direkte Korrelation des Aortenfluors mit dem Lebensalter wurde festgestellt. Die statistische Auswertung der Untersuchungen vonCall et al.² ergab, dass der Fluorgehalt der Aorta unabhängig von demjenigen des Skelettes ist.

Affinity chromatographic preparation of arterial heavy meromyosin subfragment-1

Summary Heavy meromyosin subfragment-1 (HMM S-1) was prepared by papain digestion of arterial myosin or actomyosin and was purified by agarose-ATP affinity chromatography. Proteolysis of crude arterial myosin suspensions was preceded by solubilization. HMM-S-1 thus obtained consisted mainly of a 90,000 dalton polypeptide and fully retained the K⁺- and Ca²⁺-ATPase of the parent myosin. Its affinity to agarose-ATP was comparable to that of skeletal muscle HMM S-1.The support of this work by an EMBO short time fellowship (to R. Venalot, ein Produkt aus Cumarin und Trihydroxyethyl-Rutin, vermag das Oedem zu beseitigen.

Laser diffraction used to monitor strain in mechanoreceptors ofJasus verreauxi

Variance to mean ratio and the spatial distribution of animals

Summary Biological and statistical aspects of the application of variance to mean ratio to describe spatial distribution of animals are discussed. It is shown that the parameterb inTaylor's power laws ²=a m ^b shows intra-specific variation depending on the distribution of the constituent units of the population.a andb are only parameters of a very empirical way of describing the relation between variance and mean, which itself is an indicator for spatial distribution. Melezitase and maltase from the midgut ofSesamia inferens Walker (Lepidoptera: Insecta)

Summary The activity of melezitase and maltase was optimal at pH 6.2 and temperature 35–40°C and inhibited by the end-products.
