Summary At ambient temperatures (Ta) of both 8 and 22°C, intraventricular administration of TRH (10–80 g) produced a dose-dependent hypothermia in rats. The hypothermia was due to both decreased metabolic heat production and cutaneous vasodilatation. Summary Direct administration of propranolol (100–400 g) into the lateral cerebral ventricle of rats produced a dose-dependent hypothermia at ambient temperatures (Ta) of 8 and 22°C. The hypothermia was due to decreased metabolism and cutaneous vasodilation. Summary Rats with either electrolytic or chemical (6-hydroxydopamine) lesions in the substantia nigra displayed decreased metabolism and hypothermia when they were exposed to cold (8 °C Ta), although they showed no deficiency in thermoregulation at both moderate (22 °C) and hot (30 °C) environmental temperatures.This work was supported by grants from the Pjing-Ling Neurological Foundation (Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, China) and the National Science Council (Republic of China). Summary The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T3 level was affected by temperature (25°C<7°C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T4 level was affected by photoperiod (short day < long day) at 25°C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T4 level under short photoperiod at 25°C. Thus, higher plasma T4 level under long photoperiod at 25°C might be induced by testosterone.  相似文献

Summary Administration of glucagon to rats at 25°C had no effect upon their VO2 while administration of noradrenaline or noradrenaline plus glucagon raised the VO2-At 5°C, noradrenaline had no effect upon the cold-enhanced VO2, while glucagon caused a rise of 13.7% implying increased glucagon sensitivity at 5°C. The glucagon-induced enhancement of VO2 was abolished by concurrent administration of noradrenaline.  相似文献

Summary Exposure of adult male rats to continuously elevated temperature of 32–34°C caused a significant decrease of HIOMT activity involved in the specific metabolic process of production of melatonin, considered an active pineal hormone. The effect was already evident after 24 h exposure and increased further during the next 48 h. The results obtained substantiate previous data that the pineal gland may be involved in the system regulating adaptation to extreme temperature changes.Acknowledgment. Summary The effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of two Nigerian foods-raw cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour and palm oil, have been investigated. Increased retention of both thiamine and riboflavin as a result of increased water activity (Aw) were recorded for cowpea flour stored for 6 months. A storage temperature of 5°C led to minimal losses of both vitamins in the stored flour. Differences in physico-chemical characteristics were observed between palm oil produced by the traditional method and that produced by a modern commercial method. Increasing Aw led to decreasing loss of unsaturation in the traditionally-produced palm oil during 4-week storage at ambient temperature (25°C).  相似文献

Summary 5,6-Dihydroxytryptamine, a serotonin depletor, infused directly into the anterior hypothalamus of rat's brain, produced an increase in both heat production and heat loss (as indicated by changes in peripheral circulation) at temperatures of 8, 15 and 22°C. Summary L-Aspartic acid was injected into a lateral cerebral ventricle of the sheep at ambient temperatures between 0° and 40°C. Doses of 100 or 500 nmoles·kg–1 caused a rise in heat production and/or a decrease in heat loss; rectal temperature rose. Atropine sulphate attenuated or prevented these effects.  相似文献

Radioimmunoassay was used to determine levels of the stress-inducible glucocorticoid, cortisol, circulating in the plasma of the extremely stenothermal Antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki at rest and after heat stress. Fish sampled immediately after capture (–1.9°C) had low cortisol levels (10.4±1.4 ng ml–1, mean±SEM) as did fish which were laboratory rested for 3 days. Sudden exposure to 5°C (48h) resulted in a peak cortisol value after 3 h (69.9±6.8 ng ml–1) whereas exposure to 8°C (6h) resulted in a peak value after 1 h (73.5±8.0 ng ml–1). At both temperatures levels remained significantly elevated (p<0.05) for the entire period of exposure. Increased temperature also resulted in a significant change in haemoglobin, haematocrit and mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) (p<0.05). Plasma lactate was significantly elevated only after exposure to 8°C (p<0.05). Plasma cortisol levels fromP. borchgrevinki are reported here for the first time and show this cryopelagic Antarctic species to have an unusual hormonal stress profile.  相似文献

Summary Ca2+-stimulated ATPase activity of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) preparations is activated after a short period of preincubation at temperatures between 40 and 45°C, but for temperatures higher than 48°C pronounced denaturation is observed. Heat denaturation is decreased if Mg2+ or K+ are present during heat treatment.Acknowledgments. Summary The temperature, which leads to 50% reduction of catalytic activity by heat denaturation, has been determined for 8 different enzymes from cod muscle, as being in the range between 30 and 52°C. Therefore, there are no indications of a generally different heat resistance of enzymes from cold-blooded animals as compared with those from warm-blooded animals. The same conclusion is derived from calculations ofQ 10-values, measured between +37 and – 37°C for cathepsin and glycylglycine dipeptidase.

Summary Wax comb was found to have a thermal conductivity of 0.36×10–3 cal/cm sec °C. At low air temperatures, honey bees,Apis mellifera L., form clusters inbetween the combs in their nests. The combs provide insulation and the bee behavior actually increases the insulating effectiveness of the combs. When they form a compact living layer over the wax comb, the conductivity can be reduced to 0.065×10–3 cal/cm see °C. Some aspects of the role of the wax comb in heat balance are examined in this paper.  相似文献

During the onset of heat stroke, rabbits displayed hyperthermia (42.8°C), and decreased cerebral perfusion pressure and decreased cerebral blood flow (as reflected by a prolonged cerebral circulation time) compared to those of normothermic rabbits. On the other hand febrile rabbits, during the fever plateau did not show the above responses, although they had a similar level of hyperthermia (42.4°C). Summary In rats, shivering was induced by cooling. Shivering started at 36.6°C in unanaesthetized rats and at 36.0°C in animals with light pentobarbital anaesthesia (5 mg/kg i.V.). Pethidine (2 mg/kg) lowered the onset of shivering in unanaesthetized rats to 35.3 °C and in anaesthetized animals to 33.0°C. The results suggest that the effect of pethidine upon shivering is potentiated by pentobarbital.  相似文献

Summary Exposure of adult male rats to increased temperature of 33±1°C for 3 and 10 days brought about decreases in pineal N-acetyltransferase activity. Since its discovery in 1962 by Ritossa, the heat shock response has been extensively studied by a number of investigators to understand the molecular mechanism underlying the cellular response to heat stress. The most well characterized heat shock response is induction of the heat shock proteins that function as molecular chaperones and exert cell cycle regulatory and anti-apoptotic activities. While most investigators have focused their studies on the toxic effects of heat stress in organisms such as severe heat stress-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, the cellular response to fever-ranged mild heat stress has been rather underestimated. However, the cellular response to mild heat stress is likely to be more important in a physiological sense than that to severe heat stress because the body temperature of homeothermic animals increases by only 1–2°C during febrile diseases. Here we provide information that mild heat stress does have some beneficial role in organisms via positively regulating cell proliferation and differentiation, and immune response in mammalian cells.Received 14 May 2004; received after revision 2 August 2004; accepted 16 August 2004  相似文献
