Etude immuno-électrophorétique de l'uromucoïde

Summary Concentrated normal urines were investigated by an immuno-electrophoretic technique using specific antiserum directed against uromucoid (=Tamm andHorsfall's urinary mucoprotein).A single precipitation line was observed, which, however, presented two distinct maxima. The faster antigen appeared to be situated between albumin and ₁-globulin, while the slower antigen seemed to be ana ₂-globulin. Both antigens were immunologically identical with uromucoid, although the latter had been eliminated by salt precipitation from the urines used in this experiment.The above findings can best be explained by assuming the occurrence of a polymer series of uromucoid, of which the lower members would be soluble in 0.58M NaCl, while the higher terms would representTamm andHorsfall's mucoproteinsensu stricto. It is suggested that cylindroids and nubecula represent visible forms of uromucoid.

Summary A large number of sulphur-containing compounds bearing the thiourea group -NH-CS-NH-, including substituted thiocarbanilides, 1-acyl-4-arylthiosemicar-bazides, 1-(arylaminothioformyl)-thiosemicarbazides, 4-aryl-1-(arylaminothioformyl)- thiosemicarbazides, and other related substances have been tested for potential antiviral activity. Several of these compounds have been found chemotherapeutically active against influenza virus.

De la réaction mitotique de l'épiderme de la tétine de cobaye à la suite d'applications répétées de diverses substances

Summary (1) The majority of substances tested produced a weaker mitotic reaction of the epidermis of the guinea pig nipple after 3 applications (24 h intervals) of the same substance than after a single application.(2) This decrease in the ability of the epidermic cells to be divided has to be attributed, it seems, to a habit-forming processus and not to an exhaustion of the cells; indeed after two applications of geraniol, the application of a substance of different nature, Hormoestrol, produced in the nipple epidermis a mitotic flare up as intense as that obtained in the epidermis of a nipple not previously treated.(3) Aldehyde C₉ alone, among the substances tested, does not produce a decrease of epidermic mitoses after three applications but induces cellular alterations.

Summary The effect of synthetic antiphages has been studied against different types of bacteriophage in the same bacterium, in this caseEscherichia coli. Most substances are active only against typesT ₁, 3, 5, 7 (and our type 207) but not against types 2, 4, 6. Others show activity only against type 1 (and our type 207). The antiphage activity of a substance therefore seems to depend upon a specific relationship between its chemical structure and that of the phage type against which it is active.

Summary Phenazone employed in various concentrations on the eggs of the sea urchin,Paracentrotus lividus, has a powerful vegetalizing effect on their development. The role of the interference between phenazone and synthetic process of specific proteins is considered.     

Effet inhibiteur de la tétrabénazine sur l'influence corticosurrénalienne de la réserpine

Summary Reserpine provokes an intense and long-lasting (more than 20 h) stimulation of the adrenocortical activity of the rat. Tetrabenazin (50 mg/kg) also produces an adrenocortical stimulation which is, however, of a much shorter duration. The injection of tetrabenazin 1 h before the injection of reserpine (5 mg/kg) prevents the prolonged stimulating effect of reserpine on the adrenal cortex. This effect can be compared with the blocking effect of tetrabenazin, a short-acting central depressant with monoamine-liberator properties, against the prolonged central sedative influence of reserpine.

Summary Prealbumin is prepared by a new method. Its homogeneity is demonstrated and its electrophoretic behaviour is discussed. Some new physico-chemical characteristics are determined.     

Essais de solubilisation et de détoxification de la Tyrothricine

Summary As Tyrothricin —Dubos's discovery of the antibiotic agent extracted from cultures ofB. brevis — does not give true aqueous solutions and retains, in the colloïdal state of the usually employed solutions, toxic properties for polymorphonuclear blood cells, we have attempted to effect the solubilization and detoxification of this compound. Treatment with formalin in given proportions results in making it water-soluble. The action of the formalin-treated compound on blood cells suspended in Ringer's solution seems to show a loss of toxicity. Subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in mice do not give visible general toxic effects, and the experiments incite to further investigations in this direction.

Summary Chloramphenicol, an inhibitor of protein synthesis, causes a strong vegetalization of whole larvae of sea urchinParacentrotus lividus. Combination of chloramphenicol and lithium causes a stronger vegetalization than either of these agents alone. Chloramphenicol suppresses the animalizing effects of Evans blue and zinc ions. The effects of chloramphenicol are compared with those of lithium and phenazone. It is suggested that vegetalizing effects of chloramphenicol are connected with its inhibitory action on protein synthesis and the perturbations of ribonucleic acid metabolism.

Examen histopathologique de souris irradiées après injection de cystéamine

Summary The injection of-mercaptoethylamine to C 57 black mice before irradiation (700 r) effects a partial protection of liver and spleen. It has a strong accelerating action on regeneration in spleen, intestine and probably thymus. The experiments suggest that this action is related to a protection of glucidic metabolism.

Activité tuberculostatique de thiouréesortho- etméta-substituées

Summary A large number of substituted thioureas and related compounds, the molecular structure of which diverges more or less from that of the classical 4-4-disubstituted thiocarbanilides, have been tested forin-vitro tuberculostatic activity; many of them have proved effective at a concentration of 10^–5.     

Action de la triéthylènemélamie sur les mitoses de segmentation de l'œuf de Pleurodèle

Summary Triethylenemelamine (1/400 to 1/12000) induces pseudo-chiasmas and chromosome-breakage in the egg-segmentation mitoses ofPleurodeles waltlii Michah. The primitive effect is stickiness, breakages appear subsequently, but without an interval of time between: the primary physiological and the secondary genetical effect cannot be separated. There are points of breakability, which explains the symmetry of certain fragments. The action is inverted in the epidermal cells of the larvae, where spindle alterations are prominent. Cytodieresis is never inhibited.     

Electrophorèse de protéines musculaires de Lapin

Summary Saline extracts from rabbit's skeletal muscles obtained and dialyzed at the ionic strength 0.15 contain at least 11 electrophoretically distinct components. Five of these components (n, m, t, l, s) have properties which are comparable with some characteristics of the myogens ofWeber, another component (h) is probably myoalbumin. Muscular proteins which are more soluble at higher ionic strength are not homogenous: there must be not one but two or more electrophoretically different myosins. Much work is needed to establish accurate relations between electrophoretic and classical muscular proteins.
