Norzooanemonin in the hydroidTubularia larynx

Summary The hydrochloride of 1,3-dimethyl imidazole-4-carboxylic acid (norzooanemonin), has been isolated from the hydroidTubularia larynx and its structure determined by X-ray analysis.This investigation was supported by grant No. HD-04543 from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development. Seasonal changes in the uptake capacity of the suprachiasmatic nucleus for3H-serotonin

Summary The suprachiasmatic nucleus, a hypothalamic center important in mediation of circadian and estrous cycles, is shown in adult rats to have seasonal changes in its uptake capacity in vitro for³H-serotonin.Supported in part by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (MH-25091), the National Institute of Health (HD-10263, HD-03352, 5-T01-HD00104-10), USPHS, and the Ford Foundation (grant No. 630-0505 B, C).     

The toxicity of twoBacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxins to gypsy moth larvae is inversely related to the affinity of binding sites on midgut brush border membranes for the toxins

Summary The-endotoxin fromBacillus thuringiensis subspecieskurstaki strain HD1-9 is almost 400 times more potent than the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 as a gypsy moth larvicide. The two-endotoxins compete for a high-affinity binding site on the brush border membrane of larval gypsy moth midguts. The affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD-73 is much greater than the affinity for the-endotoxin from strain HD1-9.

The delta-endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki strain HD1-9 is almost 400 times more potent than the delta-endotoxin from strain HD-73 as a gypsy moth larvicide. The two delta-endotoxins compete for a high-affinity binding site on the brush border membrane of larval gypsy moth midguts. The affinity for the delta-endotoxin from strain HD-73 is much greater than the affinity for the delta-endotoxin from strain HD1-9.     

The attenuation of prostaglandin-induced luteolysis in decidual tissue-bearing pseudopregnant rats

Summary Decidual tissue (DT)-bearing pseudopregnant (PSP) rats, in contrast to hysterectomized PSP rats, were resistant to a luteolytic regimen of either PGF₂ or PGE₂ when examined for the duration of PSP diestrus. The PG treatments, however, caused a marked fall in the serum progesterone levels on days 10 and 12, although the levels in DT-bearing rats on day 10 were significantly higher than in the hysterectomized rats.Acknowledgment. Influence of pinealectomy on serum estrogen and progesterone levels in blind-anosmic female rats

Summary Previous studies show that the suppression of gonadal function in blind-anosmic rats is dependent on the pineal gland. The present results demonstrate that in young female rats both the pineal gland and dual sensory deprivation have additional independent antigonaldal effects.This work was partially supported by state institutional funds and by NSF grant No. PCM 74-06276-276-A02. Normal osteoclast number and function in rat pups lacking parathyroid hormone

Summary In parathyroidectomized suckling rats, bone modeling and the number and activity of cells in the osteoclast population are normal. These findings are at variance with observations in older animals and suggest that factors other than parathyroid hormone influence osteoclast formation and function in the neonate.This work was supported by grants HD-07419 and DE-04629 from the NIH. A method for karyotyping mouse blastocyst embryos developing from in vivo and in vitro fertilized eggs

Summary A method for karyotyping blastocyst-staged mouse embryos is described. The use of this protocol results in the recovery of a high percentage (>70%) of readable karyotypes and can be completed rapidly.This research was supported by NIH grants HD-00827 and HD-09753.     

Adrenal dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity: 24-hour rhythmicity and evidence for pineal control

Summary Adrenal medullary dopamine--hydroxylase activity was found in male rats to have a 24-hour rhythm, with an approximately 6-fold increase at about the time of the onset of darkness. This nocturnal rise in enzyme activity did not occur when lights were kept on, nor did it occur in animals that had been pinealectomized.Supported in part by grants from the Ford Foundation (No. 630-05050A), National Institutes of Health (No. HD-03352) and National Institute of Mental Health (No. MH-25019) USPHS.     

Role of inorganic phosphate in total biliary phosphorus determination

Summary Total phosphorus, inorganic phosphate, and phospholipids were measured in bile of rats and guinea pigs during choleresis and cholestasis produced by taurocholate and taurolithocholate, respectively. Under either experimental condition, total biliary phosphorus concentrations increased significantly in both species, due primarily to an increase in inorganic phosphate. These studies indicate that, if total phosphorus is taken as an estimate of biliary phospholipid concentration, correction for inorganic phosphate is essential under conditions associated with changes in bile secretory function.This work was supported by grant HD-17556 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Zusammenfassung Zu den Mitochondrien des SchleimpilzesPhysarum polycephalum wird ein fibröser Zentralkörper beschrieben. Zwischen seiner Form und derjenigen der Mitochondrien besteht eine Korrelation: In den Teilungsstadien der Mitochondrien scheinen diese Zentralkörper ebenfalls auf die beiden Teile im Sinne einer Durchschnürung aufgeteilt zu werden.

Distribution of tetracycline-73H in subcellular components of normal and tumor tissues of the albino rat

Zusammenfassung Die Verteilung von Tritium-markiertem Tetracyclin (TTC) in subcellulären Fraktionen von normalem und neoplastischem Gewebe wurde untersucht. Der grösste Teil des injizierten TTC wurde in der Mikrosomen-Fraktion (49000g) gefunden. Tumorgewebe wenige Tage nach Transplantation nahm mehr TTC als irgendein anderes der untersuchten Gewebe auf.

Clara cell surface of the rat: scanning and transmission electron microscopic study

Summary In normal young rats, groups of Clara cells in the bronchioles showed the formation of many cytoplasmic blebs on their cytoplasmic domes. Detached blebs rested on the bronchiolar epithelial cells. The scanning (SEM) and transmision electron microscope (TEM) studies suggest localized changes of Clare cell surface activities by increased formation of cytoplasmic blebs which may represent the apocrine type of secretion.This project was supported by research grants from NIH HD-10139 and the American Heart Association, Kansas Affiliate. We used the Electron Microscope Research Service Laboratory of the University of Kansas Medical Center.     

Relationship between teratogeny and structure in the thalidomide field

Zusammenfassung Thalidomid verursacht an trächtigen Neuseeland-Kaninchen nach oraler Verabreichung starke Missbildungen des Wurfes. Geringe strukturelle Abweichungen können die Teratogenie zerstören: Zwei solche Verbindungen,N-Methoxy-thalidomid und 2-Phthalimido-glutaramid, sind nicht teratogen, während ein Esteramid, ein Thalidomidanalog mit offener Kette, hauptsächlich Missbildungen der inneren Organe erzeugt.

Endotoxin-induced acceleration of ovum transport in rabbits

Summary Salmonella enteritidis-Boivin endotoxin (1–20 g/kg) induced accelerated oviductal ovum transport in rabbits in a dose-related manner. Indomethacin prevented this effect. Decreased number of asialoglycoprotein receptors in diabetic BB Wistar rat

Summary The binding of asialoglycoproteins by hepatic binding protein was studied in freshly isolated hepatocytes from genetically diabetic BB Wistar rats. The number of cell surface asialoglycoprotein receptors was dramatically decreased (58,000±38,000 for diabetic rats compared to 267,000±70,000 for normal rats), while the association equilibrium constant was not changed. These results parallel those obtained with streptozotocin-diabetic rats and support the hypothesis that insulin deprivation is responsible for the decrease in the receptor number.     

Daily melatonin injections inhibit short-day-induced testicular regression in hamsters

Summary Daily injections of melatonin were found to retard testicular regression in hamsters exposed to LD 10:14, if the injections occurred in the morning (i.e., 0.5 h after lights on), but not if they occurred in the afternoon (i.e., 6 h after lights on). These results indicate that appropriately timed injections of melatonin can at least partially block the inhibitory effects of short days on gonadal activity in the photoperiodic hamster.We wish to thank Susan Losee and Susan Stice for excellent technical assistance and Gary Ellis for his comments. Compensatory growth of the ovaries,adrenal glands and kidneys in blinded,anosmic rats

Résumé Chez les rats qui ont subi une ablation de la glande pinéale, la présence simultanée de perte de vue et d'anosmie empèchent la croissance compensatoire de l'ovaire chez la femelle et celle des glandes surrénales chez la mâle. Une hypertrophie du rein provoquée expérimentalement après une néphrectomie unilatérale n'est pas modifiée par la perte de vue et l'anosmie.
