Summary Workers and queens of the eastern yellowjacket,Vespula maculifrons, are attracted to the artificial long-range attractant pheromone of the predaceous pentatomid,Podisus maculiventris. A 11 mixture of linalool or -terpineol and (E)-2-hexenal is as attractive toV. maculifrons workers as the pheromone.We thank A.S. Summary Several trichothecene mycotoxins were shown to inhibit the growth ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae. This effect was most pronounced with the macrocyclic trichothecenes, especially verrucarin A. Much less growth inhibition was observed with T-2 toxin. Verrucarol, diacetoxyscirpenol, acetyl T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, T-2 tetraol and neosolaniol were inactive at a concentration of 75 g of toxin per disc. Incubation ofS. cerevisiae with verrucarin A together with vitamins resulted in a decrease in toxicity. Pyridoxine-HCl, Ca-pantothenate, thiamine-HCl and -tocopheryl acetate were amongst the most potent of the vitamins tested which reversed growth inhibition, overcoming the inhibitory potential of the toxins.9 December 1986The authors thank Dr J. Summary It was found that cell-free extracts ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae contain thiaminase II which hydrolyzes thiamine and thiamine analogs. Summary Biosynthesis of linoleic acid, 182(n–6), was unambiguously demonstrated to occur in the cockroach,Periplaneta americana, and the cricket,Acheta domesticus. Axenic tissue from both of these insect species was demonstrated by radio-gas-liquid chromatography (radio-GLC) and radio-high-performance liquid chromatography (radio-HPLC) to incorporate [1-14C]acetate and [1-14C]oleate into this essential fatty acid.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation under grant DCB-8914417. Summary The chlorophyll a and protein contents of invertebrates containing autotrophic symbionts are indices of symbiont and host biomass, respectively, and the chlorophyll a content per unit protein is a good measure of symbiont: host ratio. For three different associations, the chlorophyll a content per unit protein is 0.01–0.02 g g–1.The hydra andE. viridis were provided by M. H. Christopher and J. R. Turner. I thank Professor D. C. Summary The-amylase gene ofDrosophila miranda is located on the X2-and on the neo-Y-chromosome, both developing sex chromosomes. Crosses between strains carrying different electrophoretically distinguishable alleles of the-amylase gene were performed. Females of the F1 offspring showed the expected heterozygosity, while the males proved to be hemizygous for this locus. Only the gene on the X2-chromosome is expressed, whereas the corresponding gene on the neo-Y-chromosome is not. Estimates of the-amylase activity in crude homogenates of male and female flies suggest strongly that the-amylase gene is dosage compensated inD. miranda. In contrast to this situation, in all otherDrosophila species the-amylase allele is autosomal and hence not dosage compensated.Acknowledgments. We would like to thank Betty C. Summary 1212-h cycles of presence and absence of mother mouse act as a zeitgeber and entrain the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity in the pups ofMus booduga under continuous darkness or continuous dim light. Continuous higher illumination of 15–25 lx abolishes this impressive maternal entrainment.Acknowledgment. Summary 9 groups of 6 female rats were used in an experiment using fraction 3 ofTrypanosoma rhodesiense. 500 g gave 100% immunoprotection and 1000 and 1500 g gave 66% immunoprotection when challenged with 5×102 T. brucei. 2 groups of 10 female rats were tested for a short period inoculation immune response. Summary Structures of iselin and iliensin have been revised. The structure (Ib) is secured for iselin by a direct comparison (m.p., UV, IR, PMR) with archangelin. The synthesis of iliensin (IIb) has been effected through the condensation of xanthotoxol (II, R=OH) and -cyclolavandulyl bromide (III). Summary The synergistic factor (SF), a lipoprotein which enhances in vivo and in vitro baculovirus infections, occurs in the matrix of the occlusion body (capsule) of a granulosis virus of the armyworm,Pseudaletia unipuncta. The SF attaches to certain areas on the surfaces of cell plasma membranes of cultured insect cells, resulting in marked cellular agglutination. The minimal amount of SF detectable by agglutination is approximately 3 g/ml. Cultured cells of 6 out of 10 insect species in 3 orders are agglutinated by the SF, but not those of 2 mammalian species and the erythrocytes of 8 vertebrate species.We thank Dr M. Nagata and Dr T. Summary The mycotoxin alternariol (3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyldibenzo [a] pyrone) but not alternariol monomethyl ether (3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxy-6-methyldibenzo [a] pyrone) is phototoxic toEscherichia coli in the presence of near UV light (320–400 nm). The phototoxicity bioassays with a DNA repair-deficient mutant ofE. coli suggested that DNA may be the molecular target for photo-induced toxicity of alternariol. Interactions between alternariol and double-stranded, supercoiled DNA suggest that alternariol interacts with DNA by intercalation. No DNA breakage was detected in this system; however, alternariol forms a complex and cross-links double-stranded DNA in near UV light. These results suggest that alternariol is a new phototoxic, DNA-intercalating agent and is a DNA cross-linking mycotoxin in near UV light.Acknowledgment. Summary Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vectorBiomphalaria glabrata Say and inHelix aspersa Müller as well as inLymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper.We wish to thank Professor P. Karlson and Dr J. Summary Ecdysteroid titers were measured in whole-body extracts of pedogenetically reproducing larvae of the dipteran insectHeteropeza pygmaea and in the dietary fungus. The titers are very low in the first 3 days of larval growth, but increase during the last 2 days. The level of 20-hydroxyecdysone is then significantly higher than that of ecdysone. Measurements of the titers in the fungus gave no conclusive results.Supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, grants No. 3.218-0.77 to D.F.W. and 3.714-0.80 to B.L. Summary The herbicide paraquat (1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridylium ion) has been found to exert a growth inhibitory effect on the N2-fixing blue-green algaNostoc muscorum in nitrogen-free (N2) and NO 3 media, without any apparent inhibitory or stimulatory effect on the heterocyst-forming capacity of the organism. With a dose of paraquat permitting about 20 and 50% survival of this alga a reverse mutation (fromhet + nif auxotrophy tohet + nif + prototrophy), a forward mutation (for L-methionine-DL-sulfoximine [MSO]-resistance), and an auxotrophic mutation (for carbon-auxotrophy through methylamine [MA]-resistance) have been obtained. The toxic and mutagenic effects of this agrochemical have been compared with those of the well known mutagen MNNG (N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) and found to be stronger than those of the latter in each case.The author wishes to thank Mr Girish Nath, Lakshami Chemicals Pvt. Summary The metabolism of the trichothecene 4-monoacetoxyscirpenol by intact gut tissue was determined in the fungus-feeding Nitidulid,Carpophilus hemipterus (L.) and the non-fungus-feeding caterpillars, the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) and the corn earworm,Heliothis zea (Boddie). The primary metabolite was the hydrolysis product scirpentriol. The amount of metabolism by theC. hemipterus larvae was ca 10 times that of the caterpillars on a per mg protein basis, suggesting metabolic adaptation for feeding on fungi that may contain mycotoxins.Acknowledgment.
