Effects of loading density on cafish blood

Summary Results from this study indicate that a fish density stress syndrome exists for red blood cell morphology. Smaller (by 3.5%) and rounder (by 0.6%) red blood cells were consistently found in intensive fish cultures.Acknowledgments. Studies of the blood of Ascidia ceratodes. Total blood cell counts, differential blood cell counts, hematocrit values, seasonal variations, and fluorescent characteristics of blood cells.

Seasonal, and animal size and weight variations of the blood cells of the vanadium-containing ascidian. Ascidia ceratodes, were determined. The fluorescent properties of various cell types were ascertained, and discussed in terms of cell development, phylogenic position of the species, and chemicals in the cells.     

Establishment of normal diploid and malignant heteroploid cell lines from non-treated and benzo(a)pyrene treated hamster embryo cell cultures

Summary Two normal diploid control cell lines and a heteroploid malignant transformed cell line from B(a) P treated hamster embryo cell cultures were established. The 14-month-old B(a)P transformed cell line grew 8-times faster than the 20-month-old control cell line. The control cell line showed normal diploid chromosome complement in 93% cells and heteroploidy in 7% cells while B(a)P treated line showed 83% heteroploid cells and only 17% diploid cells. This is the first report on the establishment of diploid hamster cell cultures grown for extended period. Acknowledgments. C-banding pattern on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus,and its implication

Summary The C-band on the chromosomes of the Japanese house shrew,Suncus murinus riukiuanus (Insectivora), was studied. Various types of C-banding pattern were found in the genome of this subspecies. Such banding patterns could be useful for an understanding of autosome and sex-chromosome polymorphisms withinS. murinus.Acknowledgment. The authors are very grateful to Prof. T. Possible genetic consequences of meiosis in pocket gopher (Thomomys bottae) populations

Resumen El analisis de la primera división meiótica des roeder fosorial,Thomomys bottae, muestra una uniformidad notable en la colocación de quiasmas en los bivalentes, a pesar de las diferencias existentes en los cariotipos somáticos. La frecuencia promedio de quiasmas por bivalente es muy baja (1.03), y la mayoria de los bivalentes demuestran que sus quiasmas se localizan en o cerca de un estremo del par.

Fitness traits associated with the red back phenotype in the migratory grasshopper,Melanoplus sanguinipes

Summary The dominantly inherited variant, red back, in the migratory grasshopper,Melanoplus sanguinipes, is rare in nature. The present study illustrates that is this probably due, in part, to the trait's association (either through pleiotropy of the red back gene,Pro and/or closely linked fitness loci) with lower egg hatchability, greater developmental time, greater mortality during later stages, and a greater tendency to have an extra instar.A part of an M.Sc. thesis of F. 4,11-Epoxy-cis-eudesmane,soldier cephalic secretion of the Nearctic desert termite,Amitermes minimus Light (Termitidae: Termitinae)

Summary The soldier cephalic secretion of the Nearctic desert termite,Amitermes minimus, consists almost entirely of 4,11-epoxy-cis-eudesmane which was previously identified from soldiers of 2 AfricanAmitermes species. Soldiers ofA. minimus each store circa 61 g of the secretion. Bioassays with the ant,Crematogaster californica, indicate a repellent role for the eudesmane compound in termite defense.Classification as proposed by Sands, W.A., Bull. Br. Mus. nat. A field-portable racetrack and timer for measuring acceleration and speed of small cursorial animals

Summary We describe a relatively inexpensive, field-portable racetrack and timer that can be used to measure acceleration and maximum speed of small cursorial animals. Cannflavin A and B,prenylated flavones fromCannabis sativa L.

Summary Two novel prenylat flavones, termed Cannflavin A and B, were isolated from the cannabinoid free ethanolic extract ofCannabis sativa L. Both compounds inhibited prostaglandin E₂ production by human rheumatoid synovial cells in culture.This communication is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor J. W. The invasion and growth ofBabesia bovis in tick tissue culture

Summary Erythrocytic forms ofBabesia bovis inoculated into cell cultures of the tickBoophilus microplus invaded the tick cells and showed multiplication for up to 48 h after inoculation.Acknowledgment. Aminotransferase study ofNeurospora crassa ser-3 versus wild type ST4A

Summary TheNeurospora crassa serine auxotrophser-3 and the wild type ST4A were compared with respect to their phosphoserine and serine aminotransferase activities. Volatile constituents of the scent gland reservoir ofAspavia acuminata

Summary Volatile components of the scent gland complex of the adult bug ofAspavia acuminata, an agricultural pest from Nigeria, have been identified by the technique of combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Allozymes and the hybrid origin of the parthenogenetic lizardCnemidophorus exsanguis

Summary Allozyme electrophoresis was used to determine the hybrid parentage of the triploid parthenogenetic speciesCnemidophorus exsanguis. 19 of 33 loci were polymorphic inC. exsanguis and/or the 7 potential bisexual progenitors. It was determined from allele distributions thatC. exsanguis containes genomes form 3 different species, probablyC. costatus, C. inornatus andC. septemvittatus.Acknowledgments. We thank R.L. Evolutionary implications of ascorbic acid production in the Australian lungfish

Summary It is shown that the Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) synthesizes ascorbic acid in its kidney, suggesting that ascorbic acid synthesis started before the origin of the tetrapods.Acknowledgments. The effect of cyproterone acetate on spermatogenesis and thumb pads of the skipper frog,Rana cyanophlyctis (Schn.)

Summary The administration of cyproterone acetate (CPA) to adult male frogs of the speciesR. cyanophlyctis caused a significant reduction in the number of cell nests with primary spermatogonia (stage 0) per seminiferous tubule cross section, and a marked reduction in the height of the thumb pad epidermis and mucous glands. It is concluded that the development and/or proliferation of primary spermatogonia inR. cyanophlyctis are androgen dependent.The gift of cyproterone acetate from Schering AG is gratefully acknowledged. Electrical response of bat retina to spectral stimulation: comparison of four microchiropteran species

Summary Electrical responses of the retinas of 4 species of microchiropteran bats stimulated by spectrally restricted light flashes were found to diverge systematically from the rhodopsin absorption spectrum. The divergence was progressively greater across the 4 species. The results appeared explainable by assuming a second photoreceptor class and photopigment which was present in progressively greater numbers in the retinas ofEptesicus fuscus, Desmodus rotundus, Artibeus jamaicensis andCarollia perspicillata.This work was made possible by equipment provided by grant No. EY 01228 from the U.S.P.H.S., Bob Hope Fight for Sight award No. G 522 and a grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. Effects of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (LH-RH) on the pars distalis and testis of the Skipper frog,rana cyanophlyctis (Schn.)

Summary Administration of LH-RH to adult male Skipper frogs resulted in marked hypertrophy and degranulation of basophils-2 (B2) in the pars distalis of the pituitary and a significant increase in their nuclear and cellular area. Concomitantly, there is a significant increase in the relative weight of the testes, in the number of cell nests containing secondary spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes, and in the nuclear diameter of the Leydig cells. There is also an increase in the ⁵-3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities in the Leydig cells. The results indicate that the B2 cells are gonadotrops and the hormone(s) secreted by B2 cells regulate the spermatogenetic and steroidogenic activity of the testis inR. cyanophlyctis.The free gift of LH-RH from NIH is gratefully acknowledged.
