Continuous registration of X,Y-coordinates and angular position in behavioural experiments

Summary An electronic camera and 2 simple additional circuits for the registration of the X, Y-coordinates or the angular position of animals in behavioural experiments are described.     

Feather position of the pigeon after intrahypothalamic injections of noradrenaline, 5-hydroxytryptamine and carbachol

Summary A slowly increasing ptiloerection was seen after the intrahypothalamic injections of NA; 5-HT was followed by preening and subsequent rapid feather fluffing, and carbachol produced an immediate sleeking of feathers. The naturally occurring complementary relationship between shivering thermogenesis and ptilomotion diminished or disappeared after the drugs, but feather position seemed to remain well related to the arousal state of the pigeon.Acknowledgment. Histochemical detection of the position of metal microelectrode

Zusammenfassung Die Methode der histochemischen Detektion der Lage der Metallmikroelektrode wird beschrieben. Nachdem die Aktionpotentiale registriert worden sind, wird das Eisen aus der Mikroelektrode durch Elektrolyse ins Gewebe eingeführt, und anschliessend in Serienschnitten mit histochemischen Methoden nachgewiesen.     

Lens Proteins and the systematic position of the musophagiformes and cuculiformes

On the relative position of the centromere of chromosome 3 inDrosophila melanogaster

Zusammenfassung HomozygoteDrosophila-melanogaster-Weibchen, genetisch markiert mit scarlet (st), Kinked (Ki) und pink peach (P^p) wurden bestrahlt, um Compound-3-Chromosomen herzustellen. Es wurden ausschliesslich st/st- und P^p Ki/Ki(?) P^p-Compoundchromosomen gefunden. Dies zeigt, dass das Zentromer links der Markierung Kinked liegt.

The size distribution ofTetrahymena in relation to its position in the cell cycle

Summary Tetrahymena size distribution during the cell cycle was analyzed by means of radioautography with the aid of a sonic-digitizer, and a computer. The study demonstrates that as the organism ages and passes through the various cell cycle phases the volume distribution of the organisms in each phase remains lognormal.Acknowledgments. Malaria prophylaxis in travellers: The current position

Summary Malaria prevention is a main challenge for physicians, nurses, health officers and tour operators. The attack rate of malaria in travellers is 1–10/10,000 departures, and the case fatality rate of imported malaria is around 0.5/100. Travellers should be informed about the risk they are going to take, how to protect against mosquito bites, about the antimalarials they will have to take and about what to do when a malaria breakthrough should occur.The 4-aminoquinolines (chloroquine, amodiaquine) remain the drug of choice for the prevention ofPlasmodium vivax and of sensitiveP. falciparum infections. The problem is to find an effective and safe drug combination for travellers to areas whereP. falciparum is either resistant to chloroquine, to Fansidar (the combination of pyrimethamine plus sulfadoxine) or to both. These travellers will probably best be protected by an individually tailored drug combination, which includes amodiaquine or mefloquine as baseline drugs, and a supplementation with Fansidar, Maloprim (the combination of pyrimethamine with dapsone), paludrine or an antibiotic.

Induction of a special Balbiani ring by position effect in the salivary gland chromosomes ofAcricotopus lucidus

Summary Chromosome mutations were induced by X-ray treatment of males ofAcricotopus lucicus. One of the larvae of the F₁-generation showed a dislocation of a segment of the centromeric region into an euchromatic part of the same chromosome as a consequence of mutation. In the new position, in some salivary gland cells, this segment expressed a distinct Balbiani ring. In other cells this Balbiani ring regressed, probably through the influence of ecdysone.     

Fusion between a myogenic cell in the satellite cell position and undamaged adult myofibre segments

In this report we demonstrate for the first time that differentiating myogenic cells, geographically located between the plasmalemma and external lamina of myofibres in the satellite cell position³, can fuse directly with the plasmalemma of undamaged segments of mature myofibres.
