Conscious Mind, Forgetting Mind: Two Approaches in Multimethodology

This paper explores the Confucian and the Taoist conceptions of mind and knowledge, polarises the two recent approaches in Western multimethodology, and suggests that differences between the two approaches can be channelled to form a creative tension like that between the yin and yang, so that each can improve and enrich itself more consciously and spontaneously through mutual challenging and mutual learning.

范式是科学活动革命性的探索计划和解决难题的范例。袁隆平创立的杂交水稻育种栽培思想方法具有范式的品质。本文,运用辩证系统思想方法,系统地研究了袁隆平遵循现代基因育种规律进行杂交水稻育种栽培的科学历程,揭示出＂思想方法＂与＂科学飞跃＂之间的真谛,特别是揭示出从源头上创新杂交水稻育种栽培思想方法,与引领杂交水稻育种栽培理论和实践飞跃、掀起了世界第二次绿色革命的思想方法范式系统真谛。由此,提出＂杂交水稻育种栽培思想方法范式系统＂新概念,并着力建构杂交水稻育种栽培思想方法范式系统,即杂交水稻育种栽培的观念技术创新思想方法、形式技术创新思想方法、形象技术创新思想方法、中试技术创新思想方法和实践技术创新思想方法的范式系统。这一范式系统理论,不仅丰富了从理论到实践飞跃的思想方法范式宝库,而且是一个引领技术自主创新的理论。     

科学发展观的复杂性思维

传统发展观片面追求经济增长,是一种简单性思维方式。复杂性思维是人类思维的一个新范式,具有整体性、非线性等多方面特征。科学发展观具有典型的复杂性思维特征。落实科学发展观是一项系统工程。统筹兼顾是科学发展观的根本要求,正是基于用复杂性思维来解决经济社会和人的全面发展问题。     

Dealing with Human Relations in Chinese Systems Practice

This paper is about the Wuli, Shili, Renli (WSR) systems methodology. An important concept within this, Renli, has been developed from Confucian philosophy to clarify to Chinese researchers the necessity of dealing with human relations in systems practice. At present, the only formal means of operationalizing Renli that people are exploring in China is to import from the West methods for organizing debate. However, the concept of Renli suggests that more is needed than methods alone. In particular, facilitation skills are required. It is argued that the development of facilitation skills can be enhanced if researchers can gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of group dynamics, and engage in activities of self-reflection to look at, and alter, their own roles in these dynamics and the wider sociopolitical system. There are therefore three aspects to Renli: the use of systems methods for organizing debate, the acquisition of facilitation skills, and self-reflection geared toward the development of facilitation skills and enhanced critical awareness of the politics of intervention.

集成是具有某种公共属性要素的集合。集成与系统的辩证关系 ,是集成和集成管理理论研究的基本问题之一。集成与系统存在相互依赖、相互作用的密切关系。系统理论主要研究系统的一般特征、演化规律、优化技术等 ;集成理论着重研究系统的构建、重组过程 ,以及由此而引起的系统特性变化和系统的演化。系统理论是通过探索系统自组织和他组织规律 ,实现系统整体功能突变 ;集成理论是通过探索集成过程规律 ,并通过有效的集成管理 ,实现系统整体功能最优。系统科学属于横断科学 ,集成理论则属于系统理论的分支 ,它既属于系统他组织的范畴 ,又属于系统工程的范畴。集成理论是对系统思想、系统理论、系统方法的新发展。     

从系统科学和系统复杂性的角度看中医理论

中国的中医理论古老而超出西方现代理论体系之外，然而中医中药在临床实践中的有效性是不容置疑的，由于中国传统哲学和西方哲学的巨大差异，单纯用西方科学方法和科学理论是难以解释中医理论的，在认识到这一差异的基础上，作者引入系统科学和系统复杂性的方法和概念，从一个新的角度视步分析了中医的阴阳五行理论。着重从时间维上系统的发展阶段角度分析了阴阳，从系统间关系种类的角度来解释五行，最终要在中医理论中引入现代分析观点，将中医理论方法用于复杂系统分析。     

东西部能源经济系统能源开发两期博弈分析

在两个经济时期内研究东西部能源经济系统,建立中央和东、西部地区以经济增长为目标,以能源的转移与投入为决策变量的博弈模型.从理论上分析博弈纳什均衡战略的性质,对东、西部关于中央西部能源开发战略的响应以及中央的最优决策作比较静态分析.得到的主要结论是,适度的西部能源开发与转移是能源资源在东、西部及全国范围内达到最优配置,也是拉动西部经济发展的战略选择.     

A critique of hierarchy theory

In our zeal to apply models successfully, failures of the model are often overlooked. A model may be used for quite some time before its success is questioned or before the model fails to be applied successfully. Since hierarchy theory has been deemed successful in the systems field, it is necessary and appropriate to critique the development and application of hierarchy theory using the framework presented inCreative Problem Solving (Flood and Jackson, 1992). That framework proposes a critique that uses the four areas of theory, utility, ideology, and methodology in reviewing a systems theory. It is important to examine hierarchy theory through the analytical filter of critical systems thinking if we are genuinely to understand what hierarchy theory has to offer systems thinking in the exploration of complex situations.

The Concept of Sustainability in the Evolutionary Guidance of an Educational Institution

Sustainability has been introduced at Ithaca College as a potential guiding theme for a wide range of development efforts. How these efforts will shape the institution's future is unclear, particularly when one places them in the context of recent changes in the College's approach to governance and planning. Countering rather primitive applications of systems thinking in the popular literature on sustainability, a case is made that sustainability principles can be reframed within Banathy's [Banathy, B. H. (1989). Syst. Res. 6(4), 289–296.] notion of an evolutionary guidance system, and this could lead to the next evolutionary stage of the institution.

Feminist Systems Theory: Learning by Praxis

Feminist Systems Theory (FST) is an emerging theory grounded in cultural ecofeminism and critical systems theory. FST’s contribution is in a set of principles that contain implications for community development and social research. FST brings to the fore the importance of valuing and considering the voices of people at the margins of social research and community development projects and is an effort towards a new ontology and language of person and nature to adequately address environmental marginalization. The ‘systems’ theory contribution to FST enriches our repertoires of methods and tools with an emphasis on systems thinking characterised by the use of boundary analysis. FST is ideally situated to enhance systemic intervention practice, an application of action research and participatory research practices. This paper will examine ‘process philosophy’ necessary to understand the nature of boundary analysis and the implications for FST and praxis with relevant examples drawn from case studies of current applications of FST in action research settings; (1) economic analysis and transition pathways; (2) policy analysis of the Close the Gap strategy for Indigenous equality and equity in Australia; (3) a community food distribution system; and, (4) a community health and diabetes prevention program.
