‘Cystine monosulfoxide’ and related compounds

Zusammenfassung Die früher als «Cystinmonosulfoxyd» beschriebene Verbindung (Thiosulfinat II) verhält sich wie eine äquimolekulare Mischung von Cystin (I) und dem entsprechenden Thiosulfonat (III). Oxydation von Cystin mit Perameisensäure führt, besonders in Gegenwart von HCl, über die Zwischenprodukte Thiosulfonat (III) und Sulfinsäure (VI) zu Cysteinsäure (VII).     

‘Pitfalls’ in immune electron microscopy

Zusammenfassung Es werden die Fehlerquellen diskutiert, die bei der Untersuchung von Antigenen auftreten, wenn zu deren elektronenmikroskopischer Darstellung Antikörper, markiert mit Ferritin, verwendet werden. Durch geeignete Wahl der Fixierung können einige dieser Schwierigkeiten beseitigt werden.     

Crystalline acetates from ‘Croton Resin’

Zusammenfassung Durch Hydrolyse des aus Krotonöl gewonnenen Krotonharzes wurde eine empfindliche, wasserlösliche Polyhydroxyverbindung gewonnen, die teilweise als das bereits bekannte Alkohol-Phorbol abgeschieden werden konnte. Von ihren 4 Hydroxylgruppen scheinen im Krotonharz 2 mit Essigsäure verestert zu sein. Nur eine der Acetylgruppen ist verseifbar. Die dritte Hydroxylgruppe ist mit einer höheren Fettsäure von 10–16 C-Atomen verestert, die vierte scheint frei vorzuliegen. Zwei der Hydroxylgruppen im Verseifungsprodukt sind acetylierbar. Im Grundskelett der Formel C₁₉H₂₆O₆ ist daher eine Sauerstoff-Funktion noch ungeklärt.     

‘Passie’ thinking,a hypothesis

Summary Based on observations and on analogical deductions from the organization of the cerebellum, a hypothesis of a passive process of thinking is described. According to it, we try to program the cerebrum for the handling of an idea, regarding its solution we are, however, exposed passively to the brain.     

‘Action substances’ of peripheral nerve re-visited

Fifty years ago, four action substances were described as being liberated from peripheral nerve in the course of activity. An attempt has been made to update this information. Confirmatory evidence is available that acetylcholine and thiamine do play a role in the course of activity. However, the question of the relationship in time between their release and the electrical events, and the possible effect on specific ionic gating mechanisms, remains unclarified. The liberation of potassium has been found to be a transmembrane K efflux, and the question of the existence of another substance similar to thiamine has not been pursued.a member of the Editorial Board of EXPERIENTIA from 1974 to 1982     

Spectrin and calpain: a ‘target’ and a ‘sniper’ in the pathology of neuronal cells

It is well documented that activation of calpain, a calcium-sensitive cysteine protease, marks the pathology of naturally and experimentally occuring neurodegenerative conditions. Calpain-mediated proteolysis of major membrane-skeletal protein, αII-spectrin, results in the appearance of two unique and highly stable breakdown products, which is an early event in neural cell pathology. This review focuses on spectrin degradation by calpain within neurons induced by diverse conditions, emphasizing a current picture of multi-pattern neuronal death and a recent success in the development of spectrin-based biomarkers. The issue is presented in the context of the major structural and functional properties of the two proteins.Received 7 March 2005; received after revision 22 April 2005; accepted 13 May 2005     

‘Chromatoid body’ in the spermatogenesis of scorpions

Zusammenfassung Die von früheren Autoren als «Chromatoidkörper» bezeichnete Struktur der Spermatozoiden von Skorpionen,Palamnaeus bengalensis, ist kein wirklicher «Chromatoidkörper», sondern ein Hilfskörper lipoprotonischer Natur ohne jegliche RNA.     

Quinine dimorphism among ‘non-tasters’ of 6-n-propylthiouracil

Zusammenfassung Geschmacksblinde gegenüber 6-n-Propylthiouracil zerfallen in zwei Gruppen (Dimorphismus): eine mit niedrigen und eine mit hohen Geschmacksschwellenwerten gegenüber Chinin. Jene der ersten Gruppe haben niedrige Schwellenwerte auch gegenüber den andere Geschmacksqualitäten — sauer, salzig und süss — und gehören zur -Geschmacksgruppe. Vertreter der zweiten Gruppe, das heisst 6-n-Propylthiouracil-Geschmacksblinde mit hohen Geschmacksschwellenwerten gegenüberChinin gehören zu der -Geschmacksgruppe. Patienten mit paroxysmal vaskulärem Kopfschmerz (Migräne mit familiärer Komponente), jedoch ohne elektronencephalographische Anomalie, gehören ausschliesslich zu der -Geschmacksgruppe. Die Eltern von mongoloiden Kindern weisen hohe Geschmacksschwellenwerte gegenüber Chinin auf, wobei die Väter zur -Geschmacksgruppe gehören.

Studies on the hypoglycemic effect of ‘Vincamin’

Zusammenfassung Nach Verabreichung von Vincamin sinkt bei akuten Versuchen an Ratten der Blutzuckerspiegel. Die nach Dextroseverfütterung verursachte Hyperglykämie wird durch Vincamin verhindert, der Blutzuckeranstieg jedoch bleibt nach Adrenalin unbeeinflusst.     

Time-Symmetrised Quantum Theory,Counterfactuals and ‘Advanced Action’

Recent authors have raised objections to the counterfactual interpretation of the Aharonov–Bergmann–Lebowitz (ABL) rule of time-symmetrised quantum theory (TSQT). I distinguish between two different readings of the ABL rule, counterfactual and non-counterfactual, and confirm that TSQT advocate L. Vaidman is employing the counterfactual reading to which these authors object. Vaidman has responded to the objections by proposing a new kind of time-symmetrised counterfactual, which he has defined in two different ways. It is argued that neither definition succeeds in overcoming the objections, except in a limited special case previously noted by Cohen and Hiley. In addition, a connection is made between TSQT and Price’s concept of ‘advanced action’, which further supports the special case discussed.     

On factors involved in the mechanism of ‘Taste-blindness’

Zusammenfassung Der genetisch kontrollierte, hohe Geschmacksschwellenwert — Geschmacksblindheit — gegenüber Phenylthioharnstoff (PTC) und anderen bitteren, strukturell ähnlichen Anti-Schilddrüsensubstanzen, scheint durch die Qualität und Quantität des löslichen Speichel-Enzym-Systems Tyrosiniodinase bedingt zu sein.PTC-Geschmacksblinde sind «Alles-Esser», PTC-Schmecker hingegen weisen eine erhöhte kulinarische Selektivität auf. Diese Tatsache ist um so interessanter, als der Schwellenwert der beiden Gruppen gegenüber den klassischen Geschmacksqualitäten — süss, salzig, sauer und bitter — derselbe ist.     

Modulation of an ‘equilibrium enzyme’: Ecological evidence

Summary The activity of D-lactate dehydrogenase in the foot of the snail,Helix pomatia, is closely correlated with time of year and mean daily temperature, and increases strikingly after the animals have been exposed to a nitrogen atmosphere for 24 h.I thank U. Entropy measures of signal in the presence of noise: evidence for ‘byte’ versus ‘bit’ processing in the nervous system

Summary A method for detecting signal in the presence of noise in a highly specific was is described. Using action potential interval data from 12 neurons in rat cerebellum, we have demonstrated that the sequential ordering of spike intervals contains both noise and signal. We have identified and quantified the magnitude of relative entropy (uncertainty) for specified sets of interval patterns, ranging in length from 3–5 successive intervals. Some of these sets have exceptionally low entropy and thus seem to be especially meaningful as a set (word) to the brain.     

The proton Compton wavelength as the ‘quantum’ of length

Résumé La plupart des longueurs expérimentales concernant les forces fondamentales dans le nucleus sont des multiples intégraux de la longueur d'onde Compton, ₀, du proton, où ₀=h/m ₀ c=1.32×10^–13 cm (qui peut ainsi s'appeler un « compton »). Ces longueurs comprennent la portée effective des interactions des nucléons, et les amplitudes de dispersion.On a également trouvé par différentes méthodes que le radius d'unité,R ₀, du nucleus se situe entre 1,0 et 1,5 × 10^–13 cm. Il semble donc que le vrai radius du proton peut bien être sa longueur d'onde Compton.     

Temperature-induced reversal of dominance of variegation in ‘Ornamental kale’

Résumé La transmission de l'albinisme panaché deBrassica oleracea L. ne dépend que d'un seul facteur. Chez les hétérozygotes ce caractère apparaît à basse température (7°C), mais pas à haute température (21°C). Chez les homozygotes le caractère se manifeste probablement toujours, tout en restant peu prononcé à des températures plus élevées. Ainsi il y a une inversion du caractère dominant avec changement de température.     

Blood ‘Contamination’ of liver homogenates and the liver cathepsines

Zusammenfassung Es wurde die Blutmenge in der Rattenleber sowie die Kathepsinaktivität der Leberhomogenate und des Blutes bestimmt. Unter den beschriebenen Bedingungen war die Kathepsinaktivität der Leberhomogenate nicht durch Blutkontamination beeinflusst.
