Studies on the etiology of the experimental neuropathy from industrial adhesive (glues)

Chickens treated by paintbrushing with glue distillate (used in shoe industries), hydrocarbon mixture and TOCP in hexane, developed paralysis (4/5); in these, we have demonstrated a diffuse degeneration of the myelinic sheath of the peripheral and central neurites. Besides TOCP, cyclohexane (because of its higher concentration in the glue distillate and in the hydrocarbon mixture) may be indicated as responsible for occupational neuropathy.     

The sterols of two hadromerida sponges

Summary Sterols were extracted and identified from 2 marine sponges,Aaptos aaptos andSuberites domuncula. The sponges contained conventional C₂₆–C₃₀ sterols with a saturated ring system. Minor amounts of cholest-7-en-3-ol and cholesterol were also present. Cholestanol and 24-ethylcholestanol were the major components of the sterol mixtures.We thank Prof. L. Identification of European orchids by determination of the anthocyanin concentration during development of the blossoms

Summary The blossoms of many species of European orchids contain a conspicuous blue cyanidinglycoside (Orchicyanin), which has bathochromic characteristics. This makes it possible to observe the formation of this anthocyanin during the development of the blossoms spectrophotometrically. The concentrations of Orchicyanin vary in a way that is typical of the species and genera.Some of the measurements were made at the Istituto di Chimica Analitica at the University of Florence in co-operation with Prof. Piccardi and Prof. Pantani, to whom we would like to express our thanks. Molliorin-B,a second scalarin-like pyrroloterpene from the sponge Cacospongia mollior

Summary On the basis of chemical and spectral evidence, structureIV was assigned to molliorin-b, a scalarin-like pyrroloterpene present in the marine sponge Cacospongia mollior. Differential binding of vitamin E to sarcoplasmic reticulum from fast and slow muscles of the rabbit

Summary The distribution of [³H]-tocopherol between the intracellular membranes of fast white and slow red muscles was studied in vivo. In vitro experiments confirmed a higher incorporation of the vitamin into the reconstructed sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes from slow muscle.This work was supported by funds from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche to the C.S. A possible pathway for the biosynthesis of adenochromines

Summary 5-Thiolhistidine reacted with dopaquinone produced in vitro by tyrosinase oxidation of dopa to give high yields of secoadenochromines (3) along with a small amount of adenochromines (1) which are the amino-acids responsible for the iron-(III)-binding properties of adenochromes.Istituto di Chimica dell'Università di Napoli. Diminution of 5-hydroxytryptamine in thrombocytesin vitro by chlorpromazine and related compounds

Riassunto Cloropromazina, imipramina, cloroprotixene e amitriptilinain vitro diminiscono la 5-idrossitriptamina (5HT) endogena nei trombociti di coniglio e, per quanto si è visto, anche in quelli umani. Nel plasma di coniglio pretrattato con isocarbossazide, inibitore della mono-amino-ossidasi, si osserva un corrispondente aumento di 5HT. Cocaina, -metil-dopa e triptamina hanno un effetto meno pronunciato sulla 5HT delle piastrine.

Cholinergic nerves in the rat portal vein

Summary The innervation of the rat portal vein was studied using the cholinesterase histochemical method 2 plexuses of cholinergic nerve fibers were found; an external plexus localized at the level of the outer adventitial layers and an inner plexus at the level of the adventitial-medial transitional zone and in the outer layers of the media.Acknowledgments. An astrolabe attributed to Gerard Mercator,c. 1570

The Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, Florence, Italy, possesses an astrolabe with five latitude plates that is now attributed to the Duisburg workshop of Gerard Mercator. Although it is known that Mercator made instruments, this is the first surviving example to be identified. Another latitude plate is shown to come from the workshop of the Florentine, Giovan Battista Giusti. A seventh plate, possibly engraved by Rumold Mercator, provides the only known Mercatorian polar stereographic projection. The role of Egnazio Danti, cosmographer to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, in the acquisition of the astrolabe in about 1570 is considered.     

Andalò di Negro’s De compositione astrolabii: a critical edition with English translation and notes

In this article, we publish the critical edition of Andalò di Negro’s De compositione astrolabii, with English translation and commentary. The mathematician and astronomer Andalò di Negro (Genoa ca. 1260–Naples 1334) presumably redacted this treatise on the astrolabe in the 1330s, while residing at the court of King Robert of Naples. The present edition has three purposes: first, to make available a text missing from the previous compilations of works by Andalò di Negro (ed. Bonus Opus preclarissimum astrolabij compositum a domino Andalo de nigro genuensi foeliciter incipit…Explicit tractatus astrolabij excellentissimi mathematici Andalonis genuensis, emendatus per celeberrimum et doctissimum astronomum magistrum Petrum Bonum Avogarium in foelici gymnasio ferrariensi. Fluorescence of blood cells of the tunicatesPhallusia mamillata andCiona intestinalis

Zusammenfassung Von den Blutzellen derPhallusia mamillata Cuvier zeigen nur die stark vakuolisierten (compartment cells) im UV-Licht eine stabile blaue Fluoreszenz ( _max =5200 und 4600 Å). Sie ist in den Zellgranula lokalisiert. Bei den Blutzellen vonCiona intestinalis L. tritt dagegen eine gelbe Fluoreszenz ( _max = 5900, 5200 und 4600 Å) auf, die nur von den Vanadocyten ausgeht. Diese Fluoreszenz, welche auch von den Testazellen der Oocyten gegeben wird, geht innerhalb einiger Minuten in die blaue Fluoreszenz über.

The effect of some surface active drugs on the assimilation of ammonium ions by a strain ofPseudomonas aeruginosa

Riassunto Cellule diPseudomonas aeruginosa perdono potassio durante lavaggio in acqua e contemporaneamente esibiscono bassi livelli di utilizzazione di ioni ammonio in presenza di substrato ossidabile. Un rilevante aumento di utilizzazione di ammonio è indotto dall'aggiunta di potassio o detergenti cationici (polimixine B, cloruro di benzalkonio), ma non dall'aggiunta di un detergente anionico.     

The effect of 4,5-dichlor-1,3-benzendisulfonamide and of 4,5-dichlor-1,3-benzendisulfonylaniline on the morphogenesis of the otoliths in the chick embryo

Riassunto Inoculando in embrioni di pollo di 4 giorni di sviluppo un inibitore dell'anidrasi carbonica (4, 5-Dicloro-1, 3-Benzendisolfonamide) o un suo derivato inattivo nel quale un atomo di idrogeno dei 2 gruppi SO₂NH₂ è sostituito da radicali fenilici (4, 5-Dicloro-1, 3-Benzendisolfonilanilina), si nota una inibizione selettiva della morfogenesi degli otoliti in presenza di 4, 5-Dicloro-1, 3-Benzendisolfonamide.     

A rapid,sensitive method for the determination of follicle-stimulating activity

Riassunto Gli Autori riportano un nuovo metodo di saggio sul topo di piccole quantità di ormone follicolo stimolante (FSH), basato sulla riduzione intravaginale del cloruro di 2,3,5-trifeniltetrazolio cloruro (TTC). È cosi possibile determinare quantitativamente in sole 30 h dosi di FSH almeno 50 volte inferiori a quelle valutabili con i metodi fino ad oggi proposti.     

Modifications of the vestibular nerve activity by stimulation of the efferent vestibular system

Riassunto La stimolazione elettrica della zona nucleare vestibolare in vicinanza del nucleo di Deiters (dove presumibilmente originano le fibre efferenti vestibolari) è seguita, dopo un periodo di latenza pressochè costante (22–32 msec), dalla comparsa di potenziali bioelettrici nel nervo vestibolare controlaterale.     

Hemodynamic patterns during fighting behaviour in the cat

Riassunto Durante il comportamento di lotta del gatto libero non anestetizzato si osserva tachicardia e aumento della gettata cardiaca; la pressione arteriosa e la conduttanza periferica totale variano relativamente poco. Si ha una marcata vasocostrizione mesenterica, mentre il letto iliaco subisce modificazioni di senso opposto a seconda dell'attività motoria dell'arto posteriore. In assenza di movimento si ha una vasocostrizione, che interessa non solo il letto cutaneo ma anche quello muscolare; questa vasocostrizione viene invece soffocata da una cospicua vasodilatazione, d'evidente origine metabolica, ogni qual volta vi sia attività muscolare locale.

Phenobarbital markedly increases liver weight in walker carcinosarcoma bearing rats

Riassunto Gli autori hanno dimostrato che nei ratti portatori di tumore di Walker (carcinosarcoma 256), un trattamento eseguito 48 h prima con phenobarbital produce un aumento del rapporto peso fegato/peso corporeo pari al 26%, mentre esso è soltanto del 6% dei ratti normali. Tale fatto si accompagna ad aumento di contenuto totale di proteine, di RNA e di DNA.     

The effect of coumarin derivatives on organogenesis and callus growth ofCichorium Intybus roots andHelianthus tuberosus tubers in vitro

Riassunto La cumarina ed alcuni suoi derivati (3 metil-, 3 idrossi-, 3 carbossi-, 4 idrossi-, 6 amino-, 6 cloro- e 6,7 diidrossi-cumarina), specialmente alla concentrazione mM, hanno effetto inibitorio sia sulla callogenesi di tuberi diHelianthis tuberosus che sulla organogenesi (neoformazione di gemme e radici) e callogenesi di radici diCichorium intybus coltivati in vitro. Il grado di inibizione dipende dal tipo di radicale sostituente della cumarina e dalla pianta utilizzata come test.     

Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural detection of the secretin cell in the pig intestinal mucosa

Riassunto Le cellule a secretina vengono identificate con l'immunofluorescenza nella mucosa duodenale e digiunale di maiale facendo uso di antisieri anti-secretina sintetica porcina. Parallele ricerche ultrastrutturali consentono di identificare in un tipo peculiare di cellular endocrina l'equivalente ultrastrutturale della cellular a secretina.

Dynamics of phosphoglucomutase heat sensitivity polymorphism in Culicidae

Summary In 6 species of mosquitoes of the generaAedes andCuliseta (Culicidae, Diptera) the frequency of phosphoglucomutase (PGM) heat sensitivity alleles is inversely correlated with the temperature of the environment where larvae develop. These data suggest that different selective values are associated with the PGM thermoresistant and thermosensitive genotypes in the different habitats.We thank Dr M.
