Suppression of humoral immune response in mice by administration of high molecular levan

Summary High molecular levan, a polyfructoside, has a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on the primary immune response to sheep red cells (SE) in Balb/c mice, when given as from 1–2 days prior to the antigen injection. A slight stimulation of the immune response was observed when levan was given shortly before or 1 day after the antigen.     

Survival and endogenous spleen colonies of irradiated mice after skin wounding and hydroxyurea treatment

Summary Wound trauma-induced survival from radiation may be related to increased mitosis in hematopoietic cells. Oviposition rhythm of individualDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Individually-housedDrosophila melanogaster show a gradual bimodal rise in egg production with a major crest shortly after dusk. The crest drifts toward noon after 2 to 3 days. Increased RNA synthesis during preconjugation and its effect on pair formation in tetrahymena

Summary Increased RNA synthesis, mainly mRNA, occurs in Tetrahymena very shortly before the pairing which takes place after conjugation has been induced. Specific inhibition of mRNA synthesis by cordycepin delays pairing.Supported by Stiftung Volkswagenwerk, research grant No. 112273.     

BRD7 regulates the insulin-signaling pathway by increasing phosphorylation of GSK3β

Reduced hepatic expression levels of bromodomain-containing protein 7 (BRD7) have been suggested to play a role in the development of glucose intolerance in obesity. However, the molecular mechanism by which BRD7 regulates glucose metabolism has remained unclear. Here, we show that BRD7 increases phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) in response to activation of the insulin receptor-signaling pathway shortly after insulin stimulation and the nutrient-sensing pathway after feeding. BRD7 mediates phosphorylation of GSK3β at the Serine 9 residue and this effect on GSK3β occurs even in the absence of AKT activity. Using both in vitro and in vivo models, we further demonstrate that BRD7 mediates phosphorylation of ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K) and leads to increased phosphorylation of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) and, therefore, relieves its inhibition of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E). However, the increase in phosphorylation of 4E-BP1 with BRD7 overexpression is blunted in the absence of AKT activity. In addition, using liver-specific BRD7 knockout (LBKO) mice, we show that BRD7 is required for mTORC1 activity on its downstream molecules. These findings show a novel basis for understanding the molecular dynamics of glucose metabolism and suggest the unique function of BRD7 in the regulation of glucose homeostasis.     

Transdermal uptake of a peptide hormone: inhibition by calcitonin eardrops of induced osteolysis in guinea-pig ossicles.

In view of a recent proposal that calcitonin injections may arrest the bony pathology of otosclerosis, we have tested the possibility of obtaining locally effective concentrations by giving salmon calcitonin in eardrops. Osteolysis of guinea-pig ossicles induced by injecting parathyroid hormone shortly before explantation was markedly inhibited by 3 days prior instillation of the calcitonin in an aqueous vehicle or in dimethyl sulphoxide, but not by a solution in propylene carbonate.

Summary Cholesterol synthesis has been studied in human leukocytes shortly after the isolation from healthy subjects. Not delipidated human serum reduced the cholesterol synthesis when added to the incubation medium. A similar effect was obtained when the leukocytes were incubated in the presence of physiological concentrations of low density lipoproteins.

Biochemical effects of reperfusion after regional myocardial ischemia of different duration in the open chest dog]

Restoration of blood flow after 15 or 45 min. of ischemia induced an immediate recovery of phosphocreatine level and adenylate energy charge whereas ATP and total adenine nucleotides remained significantly below their normal values. These results prove that oxidative phosphorylations are not impaired but that a pool of myocardial adenine nucleotides is lost during ischemia which cannot be restored shortly after reperfusion. The significance of energy charge as a regulatory parameter in the myocardium is discussed.     

Permissivity of the rat (Rattus rattus) of Guadeloupe with regard to Schistosoma mansoni and evidence for migration of adult schistosomes to the lungs]

In contrast to the laboratory Rat, the Rat (Rattus rattus) of Guadeloupe is a favorable host for the life cycle of S. mansoni: the parasite population is maintained at a high level (between 8 and 16% in this host until the 16th week and reproduces normally). The evolution of the parasitose is marked, shortly after the 8th week, by a transfer of schistosomes from the liver to the lungs.     

Effect of protein kinase C activation and depletion on insulin stimulation of glycogen synthesis in cultured hepatoma cells

Insulin stimulation of glycogen synthesis was nearly abolished in hepatoma cells shortly treated with 4 beta-phorbol 12 beta-myristate, 13 alpha-acetate (protein kinase C activation) but remained unmodified in cells chronically treated with the phorbol ester (protein kinase C depletion). Thus, although exogenous activation of protein kinase C results in an inhibition of insulin action, protein kinase C depletion has no influence on this process. The results suggest that, in hepatoma cells, no endogenous activation of protein kinase C may occur in response to the signal triggered by insulin.

Model choice and crucial tests. On the empirical epistemology of the Higgs discovery

Our paper discusses the epistemic attitudes of particle physicists on the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It is based on questionnaires and interviews made shortly before and shortly after the discovery in 2012. We show, to begin with, that the discovery of a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson was less expected than is sometimes assumed. Once the new particle was shown to have properties consistent with SM expectations – albeit with significant experimental uncertainties –, there was a broad agreement that ‘a’ Higgs boson had been found. Physicists adopted a two-pronged strategy. On the one hand, they treated the particle as a SM Higgs boson and tried to establish its properties with higher precision; on the other hand, they searched for any hints of physics beyond the SM. This motivates our first philosophical thesis: the Higgs discovery, being of fundamental importance and establishing a new kind of particle, represented a crucial experiment if one interprets this notion in an appropriate sense. Duhemian underdetermination is kept at bay by embedding the LHC into the tradition of previous precision experiments and the experimental strategies thus established. Second, our case study suggests that criteria of theory (or model) preference should be understood as epistemic and pragmatic values that have to be weighed in factual research practice. The Higgs discovery led to a shift from pragmatic to epistemic values in physicists’ assessment of the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking. Complex criteria, such as naturalness, combine epistemic and pragmatic values, but are coherently applied by the community.     

Changes in mammary tissue lipid metabolism in the goats during the first 2 months of lactation]

5 French Alpine Goats were studied after normal or premature parturition. Mammary tissue acetyl-C oA carboxylase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme and lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activities varied in parallel with milk fat secretion from the 3rd to the 9th week of lactation. Variations of mammary LPL activity and of long chain fatty acid secretion were positively highly correlated during that period. In goats with normal parturition, lipogenic activities seemed to reach a maximum level shortly after parturition. There was a positive correlation between mammary Ll activities and plasma non esterified fatty acid contents, possibly reflecting a relationship between adipose tissue mobilisation and mammary metabolism.     

Karyological pattern of two Chilean lizards species of the genusLiolaemus (sauria; iguanidae)

Summary The karyotypes of Chilean lizardsLiolaemus pictusandLiolaemus cyanogaster is described for the first time. Both species possess 34 chromosomes; 6 pairs of macrochromosomes and 11 pairs of microchromosomes. Karyologically it is possible to differenciate this species because the pair No. 2 is metacentric (m) inL. pictusand submetacentric (sm) inL. cyanogaster. It is shortly discussed the signification of formule 2n=34 for the species ofLiolaemus analized karyologically and its possible mechanism of acquisition.

Development of post-hatching melatonin rhythm in zebra finches (Poephila guttata)

We examined levels of melatonin in the pineal, eyes and plasma over a 24 h period during development in the altricial zebra finch. Beginning as early as 2 days after hatching there was a distinct 24 h rhythm in melatonin in the pineal and plasma. Beginning at day seven after hatching there was also a 24 h rhythm present in the eyes. In the pineal and eyes the amplitude of the 24 h rhythm increased with age. In contrast, the amplitude of the plasma melatonin rhythm at 2 days was already within the range of adults and did not increase with age. These results confirm and expand earlier findings in the European starling and parallel those from precocial birds indicating that the circadian system is already competent at or shortly after hatching even in atricial birds.     

Switch from protective to adverse inflammation during influenza: viral determinants and hemostasis are caught as culprits

Influenza viruses cause acute respiratory infections, which are highly contagious and occur as seasonal epidemic and sporadic pandemic outbreaks. Innate immune response is activated shortly after infection with influenza A viruses (IAV), affording effective protection of the host. However, this response should be tightly regulated, as insufficient inflammation may result in virus escape from immunosurveillance. In contrast, excessive inflammation may result in bystander lung tissue damage, loss of respiratory capacity, and deterioration of the clinical outcome of IAV infections. In this review, we give a comprehensive overview of the innate immune response to IAV infection and summarize the most important findings on how the host can inappropriately respond to influenza.     

Über einen Gradienten in der Samenschale vonCrepis capillaris bei der Keimung und seine mutmaßliche Bedeutung

Summary In the seed-coat ofCrepis capillaris a gradient is formed shortly before the germination. It consists in the growth of all the cells in a small, sharply delimited area at the end around the root-tip. This process takes place under a decrease of the thickness of the walls and a consumation of the reserve materials of the cells. The rest of the cells in the shell, which can not be distinguished from the cells of the pole during and after the swelling, remain at the same time unchanged. It is supposed that the gradient causes the germination of the root prior to the cotyledones. The investigations are being continued.
