Gatsby’s dream is a typical American Dream.His failure signified the decay of the American post-war spirit.His death belled the alarm for the other disillusioned people from fantasy dreams and set them to reconsider the social reality.This thesis would discuss the collapse of the Gatsby’s dream and that of American dream based on the book plot and the background of 1920s.

As the spokesman of the Jazz Age,F.Scott Fitzgerald ,based on his own experience,writes his masterpiece-The Great Gatsby.Through abundant symbols,Fitzgerald profoundly depicts the social prospect of Jazz Age and successfully displays the process of the disillusionment of American Dream which exists in majority people in 1920s.This paper,based on some basic symbolic theories,discusses how the author brings the deep philosophy to the surface to show his attitude,to reveal the theme by these symbols.And by analyzing the symbolic meanings of some characters,it further probes some causes for the failure of American Dream and how the author pays attention to common human nature.     

Two Opposed Ideas As Immature Ambivalence In The Great Gatsby

Numerical Simulation of the Mechanical Properties and Failure of Heterogeneous Elasto-Plastic Materials

A general numerical approach was developed to simulate the mechanical properties and the failure of heterogeneous elasto-plastic materials using statistical distributions of the material properties. An appropriate elastic-plastic constitutive relation is used to describe the material behavior and failure in each element, with a two-parameter Weibull distribution used to produce the initial heterogeneous material property variations. An adaptive incremental load-step is applied so that only one or a few elements (or integra- tion points) change their status (i.e., from elastic to plastic, or from plastic to strain failure) within one load step. A failed element is then assigned a very small modulus to simulate the failure rather than removing it from the model, which keeps the continuity of the geometric mesh. The numerical results show that the model is suitable for simulating the effective mechanical properties and failure of heterogeneous materials with local elasto-plastic constitutive relations.

This paper analyzes the characteristics and probabilistic models of resistance, loads, and load effects. A method was developed to calculate the probability of failure based on Monte Carlo simulation and models proposed in previous articles. Construction examples were used to analyze the influence of live load on the probability of failure. The results show that when the live load increases, the maximum probability of failure increases with acceleration. The results suggest that the construction live load should be carefully addressed during construction.

Predicting Firms＇ Financial Failure Using Financial Ratios： an Empirical Studies of Chinese Firms

The stock market has played an important role in today‘s China economy. Due to the fact that a number of the listed companies did not generate the return that the investors expected, the research on the causes of financial failure and predicting such financial failure becomes very important for future capital market development. The paper selected 43 ST(Special Treat) and 43 Non-ST companies as sample, using financial ratio and the factor analysis model to compare and analyse. This study especially analyses profitability, operation efficiency and development ability of firms and focuses on the design of an early warning system for possible financial failure of the listed companies by using factor analysis.     

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Axial Behavior of Connection in CFST Diagrid Structures

Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) diagrid structures usually have connections intersected by four oblique CFST columns. In order to investigate the performance, capacity and failure mechanism of the connections, two 1/5.5-scale specimens were tested under monotonic axial loading. The parameters in the study were the separation angle between columns. While the test was being conducted, the deflection, stress, failure pattern and capacity of the specimens were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the connection was analyzed using the general finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS, with the purpose of investigating the mechanism, the weakness, the distribution of stress, and the bearing capacity of the connections. Experimental and numerical results indicate that the connecting separation angles resulted in the difference of failure modes and the mechanical behavior of the connections was similar to the behavior of CFST short columns.     

Fractographic Analysis of High Performance Fabric Reinforced Composites after Ballistic Impact

To improve the ballistic resistance of the ballistic resistant composites, this paper deals with the microscopically fractographic analysis of their failure caused by Fragments Simulated Projectiles (FSP) and bullet with the objective to clarify the failure modes of the composites, and to further improve the ballistic resistance of the ballistic systems by hybridizing based on the currently market available materials.After the analysis, it has been found that the penetration of the FSP into the panels causes shear failure in the impact side of the target but extensive tension failure in the distal side of the composite target. The failure modes also include matrix fragmentation, and delamination, and with resin content as high as 30%, more filaments are broken by cutting in the composite. Compared with the failure caused by bullet, there are more cutting or shearing for the failure caused by FSP, but more compressive failure caused by bullet.
