Abstract:As age increases, the cognitive perception, decision-making ability, and operational response ability of elderly drivers all decline, leading to changes in their traffic risk perception and stress response ability. In order to study the stress response characteristics of elderly drivers under risk scenarios, a virtual experimental scenario of road intersection risk was designed and constructed, including pedestrian to motor vehicle, non motor vehicle to motor vehicle, and motor vehicle to motor vehicle conflict; Fifteen middle-aged, young, and elderly drivers were recruited for driving simulation experiments, and data on driver behavior and vehicle operation during the driving process were collected. Relevant indicators were selected for analysis of the experiment. The results indicate that elderly drivers generally have longer reaction time and brake pedal travel compared to middle-aged and young drivers in various risk scenarios; In high-risk driving scenarios, the longitudinal acceleration fluctuation of elderly drivers is greater than that of young and middle-aged drivers, with 10 elderly drivers having a collision accident, accounting for 33.3% of all participants. The research results can provide some theoretical basis for traffic safety policy makers to formulate measures to improve the driving safety of elderly drivers.
Keywords:Risk scenarios  Driving simulation  Elderly drivers  Reaction time  Decay
